Yup, it kinda defeats the goodwill they have accomplished during the free years. :?
How so?
I gave my opinion. If you disagree it's fine with me. I feel no need to discuss my opinion.
Maybe if it was very controversial, which it isn't.
Lol....

I think you actually know that you posted the biggest bollocks here - hence your bizarre and agressive reply to that simple, harmless question.

@Saffran: I think jonljacobi was merely interested in your reasoning, and why you came to the conclusion that it defeats Cakewalk's "goodwill which they built up during the free years". And, frankly, I would be interested to why you came to that conclusion. No attack, no controvery, no offense. Just interested in your opinion, and the reasons for it.

As I kind of started this by posting that they surely take their time: I was solely saying that... they surely take their time. ;) No blame on them for anything. I don't hate them, I don't think they're lazy. I just wonder that they announce the new paid and overworked versions, and then there's radio silence for 2 months or more.

Good thing you do, it appears... :tu:

I was twisting nothing - you however try to twist it now by claiming I had an agenda, which is 100% false. ;-)

In regards to development, I'd say it's actually nothing - especially considering that the latest (and last) update of the free version was released 27 days ago... so I really wouldn't hold my breath right now. It'll arrive when it does - might be next week or next year.

Post

Well, it doesn't bother me either, because I won't buy it anyway, but, the marketing aspect is interesting: You announce something, create a new website for the products, "hot up" the customers to what's coming next, and make them wait, and wait, and wait. I wouldn't do it that way, but, hey. ;) Maybe the usual "unexpected obstacles" appeared in front of them, and that's why Cakewalk Sonar and Next aren't ready yet. Maybe beta testers discovered more than expected. IDK.

Post

It may not be them 'hotting up' the customers, in fact they may actually be 'cooling them down' as regards the expectation of the updates for free software. It'll essentially be the same set of actual coders, who would probably be shifted off working on the old product and onto the new one.

That's a mundane and noncynical hypothesis, of course, so unlikely to get much traction round here.

That's exactly the way I see it - they seem to do their best to be a fair as possible to everyone.

They say - well in advance: "This is the last free version. The programme won't be free anymore in the future."

Then they make one final release where they seem to have done their best to squash each and every last tiny outstanding bug or issue.

Imagine the outcry had they simply - without any warning in advance - released the paid version from one day to the next and stopped making the free version available to new customers at the same time...

I think it's safe to say though that people are curious what comes next. And, the way I saw it (judging from Cakewalk's forums), there are quite a lot of users who used CbB who would pay for Sonar, so, they're surely interested in the (paid) software.

Post

Yes, of course - I'm one of them... it's just that people need to be a little more patient.

Personally I can't wait either, but then again I'm self-reflective enough to blame myself for that, not them.

Nothing to do with the pace of development but if they end up not allowing the old CWbBL to be authorized at some point in the future as has been discussed here then yes that will "defeat the goodwill they have accomplished during the free years".

In other words if one day we open CWbBL and it wants to re-authorize but can't thereby rendering the program unusable then yes that's going to upset some people and there goes the goodwill.

To me it's two different subjects and two different products. Would I pay a small amount just to keep the old CWbBL authorized and running? Perhaps, even though it's a DAW I no longer use since I had to stop playing guitar. However, being able to have access to my old projects would be something I would favor here.

Will I pay for the new Sonar? There is not enough information for me to make a decision on that at this point in time. Will it be better than CWbBL? The same with just a different interface? How much will it cost? Discounts for long time users? Etc.

I don't care enough to bother with the Sonar beta but I imagine people who are heavily invested in the old Sonar and/or CWbBL are pretty curious now about the current state of development.

As of now there's no beta, or at least no public one (I assume Noel has a small team of trusted testers like Craig Anderton, etc. who know more, but of course we don't hear anything in regards to that).
