Sylenth1 require account authorization. I asked to them if they consider a change but got no reply

Newer u-he plugins load projects made with older version?
Our latest upgrade, Filterscape 1.5, still opens in projects that are (almost) 20 years old.

Sonible have a nice serial authorisation system, but with major paid updates they no longer maintain previous versions, and sometimes these updates have little in the way of new features, i.e. there might not be a reason to upgrade on feature set alone, but rather just to maintain compatibility with Mac OS. Though this is in many ways the fault of Apple. I think I'll stick to Melda for general effects, where possible.

Uhe if you backup your Data folder.
Korg if you do offline Authorization and Backup the Korg folder from the Roaming folder (Windows), and Put it back in the Roaming folder before you re install your korg plugins.
Tone 2 with their license key.

But most software or hw are not future proof since hw can break and software can be rendered useless after a Os update after a company has folded.

If you use windows you are usually good to go for atleast 10-20 years if you stay away from Online, CR or other intrusive copy protections since they are very backwards friendly when they release Os updates.

Thank you for join the topic.

Is that working with major versions too? I mean a project made with Zebra 1 can be opened with Zebra 2/Zebra Legacy installed? Or generally speaking a future Diva 2, Repro 2, Hive 3 and so, would be made with that retro compatibility in mind?

The only truly future proof software is that where the source is open. As others here alluded to, companies can come on and tell you how long their software has worked because they still exist. The companies won't exist forever, their software won't be able to changed to keep up with technological advances and obviously things like online activation means as soon as those companies end, the product ends. In 50-60 years time 99% of the software today will be gone and people will still have analog synths from the 1970's fully working.

I will be 115 in 60 years time. I do hope my 1970s synths still work.

They may still work or being fixed, we not su much :D

I actually don't have any 70s synths, but I do have recreations of 70s synths. Of course they will likely fail within a few years!

freeware vst synths are pretty much free of hassles

especially the ones made from 20+ years ago
they all pretty much were designed for windows xp
microsoft doesn't update windows xp

but if windows xp stops working, physically that is,
that's when the hassles begin

if that happens, and i suppose if one is determined enough,
one could hunt for replacement windows xp computer(s)

plus, one might not be trying to make "futuristic" music
some people even make music with just banjos and stuff
troglobites might survive the spotify age?

well, surving that might be a cakewalk compared to
other worse scenarios like...

one hopes that vlad the i'm paler isn't a sociopath
and doesn't go nuts and conclude that
"humans is a virus to planet earth anyways"
and starts world war 3
or create a selective virus that kills everyone but his people

on the other hand, forget all that cos it might not happen, so...

And how much money do you think you will have to use to keep that 70s dinosaur alive during those 50-60 years if you even can find parts for it in 10 years time?

People spend lots of time and money keeping old things running.

Its less difficult to keep a computer running an old system which hosts a good emulation of an old analog, than keep that old analog running. And future developers will keep recreating those emulations for ages…
You could even get an Atari running on a FPGA like the original… Fire up old projects and send the Midi to your box with whatever emulation it hosts…
The main difficulty is copy protection.
Alone in that regard, open source projects are the most save bet. Vital is a good example that open source is not a contradiction to a commercial mindset…
