Hey everyone!
An acquaintance of mine is hosting a workshop for noise/experimental music techniques at Coaxial Arts in Los Angeles California on Sunday 11/26. The event starts at 3pm.

I'll be doing a little presentation about using piezo mics with small speakers to create acoustic feedback in different ways. I'll also be bringing parts with which attendees can build their own passive shaker box. I'll provide some tips about how to make a useful little instrument from those parts. My presentation will be around 4pm.

Hope to see some KVR folks there!

If I book a last minute flight I could go....

Well that was a lot of fun! Tonight was my first time soldering in front of an audience and it didn't go horribly awry. I'd go so far as to call it a success! I was attempting to illustrate how easily a mint tin becomes an expressive instrument with a piezo pickup and an 1/8" jack. Everyone in attendance got parts to make their own and I assembled one, live on stage. People really got a kick out of it when I drilled through my electric shaker box while it was plugged in... some really gnarly sounds!

I wish I had gotten a recording of the set or at least some pictures but you'll all have to trust me. :hihi:

Each performer had a unique approach to sound and composition. The duo who went on first created sound environments with a prepared trumpet, a sampler and many house hold objects with their own tonalities, which they played to spoken word prompts. Another performer used a small modular and some effects to create loops of intense textures. The headliner did a set around a no-input-mixer, some pedals and one of my shaker boxes. I created feedback networks with my Field Kit, Cocoquantus, a shaker box, an electric kalimba, a few small speakers and some surfaces with interesting resonant properties. We all did a short presentation about our techniques before our performances. It was quite inspiring. I hope I can participate in something like that again in the future.
