AUDACITY - Does it have comping? I searched and searched online for an answer, but no luck.

Post

It does not have comping.
1. If it would, the feature would be advertised, not?
2. Forum discussion here states so

I'm dumb - what is comping? That's the third time I've heard that. Plugin Delay Compensation? (Audacity does not, but I've never had any delay issue using a plugin in it)

Post

What is a comp in music production?
Vocal comping (short for 'compiling') involves recording a few takes of the song and splicing together only the best parts. The end result features the singer's best work, while still sounding like it was done in one take. If this feels like cheating, it's not.

Chances are you'll never need it. ;)

Audacity's not a DAW, it's an audio file editor. So, no, it does not support multiple takes.

Post

Well, you can of course record multiple takes and select the pieces you like best. Manually.

Comping is the automated flow: play a segment in a loop, record each iteration, let the user select the best segment and mute all others.

And in jazz it means something else: https://jazz-library.com/articles/comping/

this is not an unreasonable feature for a multitrack editing software that is widely used for recording voice. DAW? Depends on definition.

Post

Thank you. Now I know. I really thought it was PDC.

There's nothing wrong with Audacity not being a DAW. There's nothing wrong with having a good audio file track editor.

Historically Audacity worked by making destructive edits to the underlying audio data. Its workflow is very different from a DAW, which never modifies the original data. Comping is a natural workflow for a DAW (and all that I know of support it) but more difficult for an audio file editor like Audacity.

I think Audacity got limited nondestructive editing recently but don't know much about it (it's not something I would use Audacity for as there are tools whose workflow is far more centered around this).

I'd say Audacity is about to Sound Forge 10 level.
