The different original versions were not compatible with each other due to changing formats... 1.3 is not compatible with 1.4...

MED SoundStudio is free now & contains the HighLife engine but the instruments made in it by sampling a VSTi output only work in MED SoundStudio not any of the other HighLife versions... Also HighLife not as robust to handle high thrust VSTi like when I was sampling Krishna only the less modulated patches would work after testing it was indeed HighLife issue not anything else...

But there's always ESC which does great job sampling VSTi... Or Renoise which makes XRNI from VSTi then you can convert using ESC...
