Hey
Can you recommend new bands playing rock with maybe a slight psychedelic twist, that sometimes use mellotrons, maybe some synths, with songs that tend to be melodic, maybe venture into prog, but not too much? Not sure how to describe it in more detail, but basically I'm looking for rock songs with a big, lush, melodic sound that could take you on a little trip.
I wonder if people have their favourite bands or songs that fall into this theme?
Many thanks.

Well, the obvious answer is Radiohead, but you’re probably already aware of them.
Adrian Belew is still kicking around, though not too much has been interesting lately. I bought a bunch of his newer albums from his Bandcamp page and I was disappointed with it. However, I’ve not heard Elevator yet.

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't even considered Radiohead.
I've had a listen to a few tracks by Adrian Belew, but this isn't it. Unless you have specific albums/songs to recommend?

Some Wilco songs could fit under this description. Some Flaming Lips albums such as Soft Bulletin.
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

not sure it fits your search but gives me those vibes, i've been looking for such sounds too recently..
there's also "space rock", look it up on youtube..
There's some giant 5h playlists with much variation and some bands might resonate with you...
Doing rogue searchs (mostly these days/always was a bit but selection ranges were broader) is an endeavour in itself, looking for stuff burried in massive masses algorythyms.

My Morning Jacket - I’d say you’re describing this band. Kind of hit and miss with me, but you might dig it. Copycat band Fleet Foxes was more successful - you may like them, as well.

They have a huge catalogue so it will take time to listen to it all. I'm looking forward to it. Many thanks.Bodhisan wrote: Sun Nov 19, 2023 7:57 pm My Morning Jacket - I’d say you’re describing this band. Kind of hit and miss with me, but you might dig it. as I'm typing this....I'm listening to "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream" and this fat string machine came in! Yeah! That's more like it....this one sounds almost epic....Thank you for the suggestion!

Well, not entirely the style I'm looking for but this is soo good! Still a lovely mix of instruments and very deep, evocative....I love this.tasty tatsyn wrote: Wed Nov 15, 2023 11:33 pm not sure it fits your search but gives me those vibes.....

About doing searches...yeah...I normally dig into Spotify, when I find a song, I go to its 'radio' playlist and then select another song I like and go into its 'radio playlist' and so on....it's an endless journey that I do like, I must say. There's so much amazing music that can be discovered that way.
However, I thought that asking here on KVR would give me a different entry into bands I didn't know about.

What a find. Thank you!
EDIT: This reminds me in places of Tauk, a band like a lot.

Wilco - such a lush sound. Thanks for the suggestion. I've just added two of their songs to one of my playlists. Good result, even if I haven't found 'the' sound I'm looking for yet.mumpcake wrote: Wed Nov 15, 2023 6:51 pm Some Wilco songs could fit under this description. Flaming Lips - of course! I'm a fan but never connected their sound with what I'm looking for but you are right, they do tick the boxes. I guess they get to weird at times...

I guess it would be good to post some examples from my end too.
The start to this song is exactly that sound. It's so lush and expansive. The whole song is great, but the first 1min40sec is just sonic bliss.
Anekdoten - Writing on the Wall
This is something maybe less obvious, Noel Galagher's "Broken Arrow". That moment at 0:50...ahhh...so nice:
Phideaux - Soudrome. Again that lush expansive sound once this (short) track gets going...maybe the synths could be mixed more upfront, maybe needs that Mellotoron (:D) but it's so good otherwise:

I actually liked 'Evening Star Supercharger' and 'Falling Down' from the Bird Machine album. Just had a quick browse through their discography...Thanks for suggesting this band. Another discovery albeit a different style.
