Yeah - I'm not one for Orion Plat either.
It's been a while and I haven't upgraded since - whatever version it was.

But it was just fundamentally not me.

The patterns stuck to instruments floating in space, the pattern numbering system which may be quite hardware based but just purely painful to me.

I'm the opposite of BONES I think. I'm one of those contemptible spreadsheet sequencer guys.

I actually didn't think it's automation was that bad though. Really fluid automation curves I remember.

I did like some of its synths etc. but they weren't anything I really needed in a host anyway, so they weren't enough of an asset for me to continue.

I can't comment too much about stability. I thought Orion Pro sucked for stability (long time ago), but I just didn't use Orion Plat enough to form a proper impression.

I was more successfully productive composing in Orion Platinum than in Logic and N-Track, but much less productive than in FL, Muzys and EnergyXT.

But - hell - some people are really having no problems at all in using this to do all their stuff.

You can make fun of BONES but he's certainly not having any difficulty doing the whole lot with Orion Plat and CoolEdit 2000. And look at Kriminal. He's like a music-making machine. Even just two people (who happen to be far more productive than I am) tell me that this host can't universally suck.

Please allow me to enlighten you.
1. Its really easy to insert audio. Why? Because it is the same process as inserting anything else. The consistency of the workflow is excellent - add a generator, load a preset/clip, off you go.
2. Quality. Rich makes sure everything sounds incredibly good. Best EQ around, awesome filters in most generators and world-class effects.
3. Flexibility. Mostly I'm talking about it's skinning features but there are always several ways to go about doing most things. Just compare the way I do stuff with Steven West's methods.
4. Completeness. More than any other application, ORION Platinum gives you all the tools you need to pump out high quality, finished songs without having to resort to any 3rd party plugins if you don't want to.

Now, to address your scantily inferred criticisms.
ORION has not crashed on me in about two years. I have not lost any work in 3 or 4 years even though I am very, very bad at saving regularly.
Adding audio is a piece of cake, consitent with adding any sound source, as stated above.
What is the point of having an audio editor when you can set ORION up to automagically launch your favourite audio editor from the Playlist and have its full power at your disposal? It is an infinitely better option.
You can preview samples in both the Sampler and DrumTrack generators, either as hits or in context if the sequencer is playing whilst you audition. The latter is a brilliant option.

So few people around here seem to able to get by with just one host yet we have almost finished our second album using just ORIONPlatinum and a few plugins. Moreover, it is because of the incredible quality of ORION's tools that NOVAkILL have had the incredible success that we have managed over the last couple of years. If I were using any other host, or hardware, we would not be riding as high as we are now, guaranteed.

Your comments really say a whole lot more about you than they do about ORION, especially as the substance to vitriol ratio in your posts is so so obviously skewed. At least when I get stuck into something I am able to back up my ranting with solid facts [even if I have to make them up].

Well, I can't stand Orion either.

It's just seems like a clunky 16 bit app written for Windows 3.1.

Then elucidate! What does "seems" mean? It certainly can't mean "sounds" because it clearly sounds as good as anything else out there. Do you mean "looks"? I could never use the Default skin but, fortunately, I don't have to. Are you talking about workflow? It is deceptively simple to use, perhaps its greatest strength. If you prefer unnecessary, anti-musical over-complication of simple processes then you probably won't like it. So if you're gonna have an opinion, have a proper one.

I was refering mostly to the feel of the interface. Other than that, it's been quite a while since I've played with it but, from what I remember, the workflow seemed OK for the most part. One thing I really don't care for is it's automation. Not sure if recent versions employ spline-based automation but it would help IMO to get away from the MIDI style drawing. I also don't like that the plugins can't be hidden. I can't remember the other problems I had with it but I remember a lot of small idiosyncratic things that just really turned me off.

Soundwise it seemed just fine.

I might be a little uncomfortable with Orion's automation editing tools, but that's about it..

I agree it's a wasted resource pushing for audio editing when one click will load your wav file in the editor of your choice..

There are more things I love about Orion than things I don't. If I was handed the keys, I would add:

Better midi routing {Neuralis's CC automation DNW in Orion :x )

Easier audio INPUT, not editing..The bias in studio applications to almost exclusively midi based track without decent audio aquire just blows for me..If I didn't have Audition, I would probably never record bass or guitar at all rather then f**k with orion for it..

Better automation editing tools..Maybe it's just me, but I have a REALLY hard time doing what should be simple stuff like drawing a curve in pitch or whatever..I would REALLY like to see spline editing or just the basic point click = add spline node..This is the BIGGEST reason I don't use Orion much anymore & it bums me out that I hit that wall in extending my productivity, cause I would still be using it today if so..

That said, I still fire it up all the time & love it, but like every host, it has it's weakspots & advantages.

How these will effect you is critically proportional to the kind of work you wanna do.

bleh..why did I just type all this f**king tripe..

Orion bashers are f**king shitheads..

yeah..

That's better.

:D

ciao losers :P

Too f**king true, john, but you can't fault BONES' productivity a single iotta, can you?

It's GOOD to be passionate about what you use..It's a sign of artistic integrity..Maybe that's why the f**ker's still kicking out tunes when he should be humping a hill on the local golf course instead..
