Greetings,

Interested in finding a basic step sequencer for drums. Currently use Battery but of course it lacks a sequencer, and I just find drawing midi somewhat frustrating. I used to use Redrum for basic patterns and found it limited but useful.

I've got Reaktor and I know there are sequencers somewhere in there, so happy if anyone can suggest a Reaktor tool. I've even playing around with Audio Modern Playbeat which is great and I'll probably end up using that too, but I'm hoping to keep using Battery and Playbeat has many features I probably don't need. DAW is Cubase 12. Any suggestions welcome.

I would absolutely suggest Atlas. It's a drum sequencer, and drum beat generator. It has midi out to drive Battery if you want, as it also has audio drag and drop to create your own loops. Its on sale for €50 i believe.

Would also recommend Atlas. The developer is also currently working on improving the sequencer further, as it's clearly one of the strong points of the plugin.

A nice benefit is that you'll also get something that will help you find samples in a visual way that your DAW or or standard Drum plugins won't have.

As a standalone sequencer to drive something like Battery it doesn't get better than this.

Looks great. Have you used it with Battery?

Works great. The euclidean sequencer is great for creative generation of rhythms and melodies the step sequencer is about as comprehensive as it gets.

Step sequencer has velocity, ratcheting, probability, Gate length, and nudging. You can subdivide parts of the sequence into smaller parts, have them play in random orders etc.

Every parameter can be randomised individually. It all feeds into a pattern chainer that allows you to mix up different parts of each pattern.

Everything is midi assignable and you can save your own custom maps.

Endless fun.

HY Plugins are always really well coded.

There is also Audiomodern Playbeat

Yep! It works great. You create a preset for it (MIDI mapping) and you are good to go. I also used it in Ableton Live to sequence DrumRacks and I also used it in Cubase 13 to trigger D16 Drumazon.

The sequencer is stable and offers plenty of sequencing types for the price. And you can scale size.

Highly recommended.

I use Playbeat to sequence everything now. Instantly usable results with variations on the fly with instant access to the midi and audio.

Excellent. Going to demo it and Atlas over the coming days...

Atlas is good, but the sequencer isn't that advanced.

It has a quick process for adding beats and changing velocity, but it's fairly limited in its groove options, and the drum pads can't be linked and choke other pads i.e chh choking ohh

With a few extras it could be really great for sequencing, rather than 'just' good and quick.

Beat Scholar is incredible for drum sequencing, by far my favorite. Second choice would be Playbeat.

Not that I love recommending anything from Native Instruments, but Maschine Mikro mk3 is on sale for $199 and integrates somewhat with Battery, so that's an option. I personally have a love/hate relationship (mostly hate) with my Maschine mk3, but it's a much more advanced sequencer than you'll find in many dedicated plugins.

Also, a big +1 to Atlas, although I've found that I most often just use Logic's own internal step sequencer. I haven't kept up with Cubase (stopped upgrading/using it at v9.5), but I assume they still haven't updated that ancient thing they call a step sequencer, or have they?

Yeah, Beat Scholar is excellent. Super fast to do complex stuff and I get along well with its novel interface. I think the "pizzas" are a great idea!
