The ATH-M40x have been a point of no return for me. I think they're the best quality/price headphones. They're really tight though, causing too much pressure on the sides of the head; can also be annoying if wearing glasses. However, I found a way to slack them and they're now comfortable. I really enjoy their stereo image and I can work way better in the low frequencies rather than with my HD600.

I had a pair of SRH1840. I really liked the sound and the earpads, but the "dual head band" were causing a lot of pain. Sold them.

HD280, I can't stand their sound coloration and the pressure they cause on the sides of the head anymore.

An online review wrote:The Sony MDR-7506 are straightforward, closed-back, critical listening and recording headphones. They have a well-balanced sound that packs a good amount of bass but also a sharper spike in the treble range that could sound a bit harsh with already bright tracks.
Closed-back... well-represented among the headphone calibration applications... well-stocked/ readily-available... can be had for under $100... I can see why these may be the go-to headphones for many folks.
I'm really thinking of switching to them for all my personal mixing works, but how much are they good for mixing? With sonarworks or similar calibration on

Closed back for most open-air recording.
Open back for mixing and mastering.

AKG K701 - my go-to's for most production work; so comfortable; I can wear these things for extended periods with little fatigue or pressure on my skull; very open sounding and detailed.

BeyerDynamic DT880 Pro - secondary go-to's; much tighter clamp than my 701s, so they can become a little uncomfortable after an hour or so; also very detailed.

Slate VSX - just got these last week; initial impression is that they may live up to the hype, but have yet to put them to the test with a final mix.

BeyerDynamic DT770 Pro X - purchased these recently, primarily for recording vocals.

Sennheiser HD280 Pro (2 pairs) - used exclusively for recording for the past 15 years, but they're starting to show their age (nylon coating falling off the padding); recently replaced them with the 770 Pro X and will be relegating these to backups.

I know exactly what you mean. I hate when the coating flakes off the padding; the little black flecks end up everywhere. I got so annoyed by it that I painstakingly removed all of the remaining coating from the ear cushions, and now when I purchase new replacement ear cushions, I reuse those coating-free cushions and just swap-out the foam inserts.
