I am filter lover...no...i am filter addict if have to be honest :):):)
For years i refuse to use external filters, making everything with build in subtractive synth's filters.
Few days ago without any intention to buy it i just download and put over a Sylenth1 track Toneboosters DualVCF filter...
This is one of the worst tests you can do (for filter developers),cause Sylenth1 filters are so good,if a external filter isn't better fktp the sound immediately and you'll never even think about buying it after that.
What a shock to find ,that the track get so easy pro polishing i needed before and takes days to find rigth eq,saturator so on to make it sound better inside the mix.
I am curious if somebody use external single or dual fitters, which one is your favorite and would recommend for polishing the sound, sound design stuff, more dynamics so on.
Cheers :)

So you're a filter addict but for years refused to use external filter plugins , makes sense
If you think Toneboosters VCF is good you should try out the Drop ,.
The Drop is the pinnacle of analogue modeled filters

I like the Toneboosters, have not used The Drop (does it go on sale?) but another one that is very good is Smugi - very old school filter bank (so I am going outside single or dual but this is a different creature and worth exploring) :) https://www.feltinstruments.com/smugi

Smugi automates beautifully but is worth noting that the amount you drive the input has a huge effect on the filter characteristics.

I like standalone filter plugins sometimes just because I'm doing stuff with modular (hardware and software) and weird FX patches, it just makes sense to throw some filters in there.

Also, throwing a single filter after a polysynth can be nice.

And filters that are modulated by envelope followers, but mixed in at a fairly low level so you get the phase shift more then actual filtering? That can be magic.

With that, I like:

BPB Dirty Filter
u-he Runciter (from the Uhbik FX bundle)
Sugar Bytes Wow2
Moogerfooger MF-101S
Minimal Audio Rift

(...I guess I like 'em dirty. :D)

So how do you trigger those external filters if you need to apply a fiter envelope on a key press? You can't really substitute a synth built-in filter. Those external filters with the transient detectors are just not working reliably.

Ok,first thanks for reply and interest :)
Subtractive synths rely on filters to create all these beautiful sounds :)
You don't need external filters if you have two build in filters in serial mode, basically second could dynamize ,polish or act like exciter of first,so i didn't need external ones, most of my presets are in serial mode for reason.
Parallel mode at first seems more rich and diverse ,but in time man realize it need external editing and inside the mix is kind of rough.
Was nicely surpriced to find out that even best presets could be polished with right touch of external filters.
For now this is just first contact so to say,i'm not good as advanced mixing, just note that good external filter add something i didn't expect, cause some of free ones i tried before ruin the original sound and didn't have intention to buy anything, but immediately felt in love in tonebooster's one, plan to buy more stuff from this developer, really nice plugins, but no demo videos of their products.
Cheers :)

Some filters can recieve a midi input: Serum FX, Shaperbox, Rapid Fx, Volcano, The Legend FX (love that one), Kilohearts snapheap multipass. Just to name a few.

Can't get what you discuss.
I need extra color and polishing, not a serious reshaping of original sound.
Still in the beginning of experiments,so can't say what's helpful and what isn't.
For now use mfilter and dualvcf, but filterfreak is 29 euro so will test it these days.
The drop is superb, tried it,but expensive for the moment and not very intuitive.
Will be interesting people with more experience and ideas in mixing to share their points about external filters.
Cheers :)

I own The Legend, but I don't see this one available as an effect in Studio One 4 on Windows. :?

Thank you, but I just checked my account and it's definitely not there. Guess I should reach their support.

I often use Volcano3 as external filter.
And u-he Runciter... after they finally update it so it's useful again :)
I tried the Drop and it's okay but didn't blew me away.
u-he filterscape is on my buylist this year as well. still contemplating it

however that's also why i like Twin3 - because i love Volcano3 :)
