Ableton 12 - Generative MIDI, Multiband Distortion and more

Not directly related to Live 12, but - a workflow question about organising your sketches.

Sometimes when I'm mucking around ie exploring an instrument perhaps or something, I'll think "this is interesting and worth keeping, but I'd like to use it in a different project". It's a sketch of an idea.

I currently have a sketches folder in the browser, and I'll drag and drop a track into that. That feels a bit clumsy though, since it creates a new project with the single track - is there a better way of doing it?

You can drag & drop the clip itself to your folder instead of the whole track, it will be saved as .alc-file. This way you will have the instrument and midi clip saved, so you can preview it from the browser and drag it into your project as a new track. Super useful.

It will still create a project folder if you drag a clip/track that is an Ableton instrument that uses samples...

Instead of having a "normal" sketches folder, you could create an empty project name for exemple "My Sketches". It will create a folder named "My Sketches Project" and inside it a folder named "Ableton Project Info" and an "My Sketches.als".

You can delete the "My Sketches.als".

Then use that folder (My Sketches Project) to drag your track/clip inside.

That way it will not create a project folder inside your folder each time you drag a clip/track ...you will have all your .alc/.als inside the same folder...

Indeed, it needs a "Ableton Project Info" folder and there is one in the User Library folder.

Already there's a great looking M4L devices being made for the piano roll! Just picked this one up (it's free).

This is awesome to see. Ableton should realise that with M4L, they just need to give people enough hooks, and great things will follow.

CV Tools was included in Ableton Live 11 Standard, but is now excluded in version 12???

Finally got a look. The settings/preferences dialog now scales with the rest of the interface! I miss the buttons to show hide the arrangement track controls, though they are in the view menu.

Return tracks are now mixer only? Fine by me as the mixer is available in both views now. I like the new Twenty-Four carat theme.

The whole song key thing is just clutter to me. Wish you could add/subtract items from the main bar.

Tab to navigate? Cool. Hide labels? Nice, though I usually need them. Shift/Command/Space to move insert marker to playhead? I can use that. New Playback menu. Fine.

Still needs more key commands, and the ability to configure them to your own taste. A few of the hardwired commands have changed as well. That surprises me. Not sure how long-timers will feel about that.

Crashed several times on me so far, but all in all, quite a nice improvement.

Anyone else checking their email twice a day for beta access? I'm usually not that interested in betas, but I'm really curious about the new browser. I can't stand any browser in any DAW, so I have high hopes I guess, that this might be the application browser I actually use.
