This has twelve electronic/acoustic instrumental tracks, running close to four hours. Some peaceful, some not so much, as is the case with science in the wilds. Most of these songs are at Spotify and Youtube, and the other Distrokid partner sites, or will arrive during the next few days. Hope you find a song worth hearing twice!

Made in the AVLinux distro, using linux Reaper and windows Reaper in wine, and also some standalone linux audio instruments in wine, with yabridge vst plugin wrapper. All the parts connected with the qjackctl patchbay app.

Well this is fun, seeing how going Linux only on a new build goes, so far pretty good.

Some nice surprises (eg. PluginAlliance plugs can just be copied over with their associated preset folders), some need a bit more coaxing (kilohearts installer won't let me type any reg info...) All my staples working without issue though (Valhallas, e-phonic Invader, Aalto...) Not convinced I'm doing the yabridge thing right (seem to have files everywhere ) but I can address that/tidy up with a bit more experience.

So, only real issue so far: Alt key in Reaper... works fine for shortcuts (alt+d for docker etc) but doesn't seem to work with the mouse. Eg. Trying to change the curve on an envelope drags the whole window around (guess that's a standard xcfe function?), alt click on an effect in the TCP doesn't delete it etc etc... Is this normal or something I need to address somewhere? AVLinux.

The Guitarix dev ( https://github.com/brummer10/ToneTwistPlugs/releases aka Tramp at www.linuxmusicians.com ) is now using a build system that churns out lots of plugin formats.
These are from left to right, clap, lv2, vst3, and vst, and below, another multi-build plugin, a vst
from the AirWindows dev, all being nicely noisy in a Reaper session. Hope this release method gains popularity!

They also have a registry editor app that works in wine, and will be handy sooner or later, as Native Access is not thinking in linux-tense at times, and will want something removed first.

Got me thinking, I literally only use GuitarRig now from NI (mostly for the other non-'guitar' effects..), maybe I should try out the other native options first. I mean, I have PA Triad working so not exactly short of effects...

I am surprised that hard core Linux users would want to use commercial VSTs made for Windows and OSX in thier chosen distro. Surely the point is to get away from all that? Or am I missing something?

Everyone is different. Linux is about freedom — being able to do things how you want to. Many of is started on Windows, and have quite an investment with plugins we already own. I personally am trying to use native Linux plugins only. I have most everything I could want in native Linux software. Others feel comfortable with using a preferred mix. Everyone does things their own way.

I assume the main point is to get away from Windows and macOS. If I end up replacing my macOS DAW setup with Linux I'd be aiming to stick as much as possible to native plugins. But there are some I'd miss (like Kilohearts and Melda).

Hopefully more devs will add Linux support over time. It should be relatively straightforward if using JUCE and even with the initial workload required, I would expect it to be a lot less painful to maintain compared to macOS.

Same here, if there's a decent native alternative I'll jump on it, but ultimately best tool for the job, not aware of anything native that can replace the eg. valhalla or unfiltered audio plugs for me currently. Whereas the few NI plugs I have loaded in Windows may be replacable so not sweating them yet.
