>>> Ableton Live 12: Rad Hidden Features
Roar looks great! I wasn't that stoked when Bitwig got probability features so no comment there, but the in key features for filters etc. is also pretty amazing!
Now we need to access the beta.
You coming from v3 should be quite annoyed :x
Well personally any name I made for myself with Ableton is mostly negative. I'm likely seen at least by the few employees that monitor their forums as a constant critic who helps newcomers but used to get into long debates with right wing users on their forums, that along with some actual trolls, shut down their anything goes forum policy.

I haven't asked for any special consideration. The modern take isn't that critics are valuable, everyone wants constant praise, and flatly I blame that attitude for the fiasco that happened with 8 when it was released as an unstable mess, because beta testers were too busy sucking on the udders of Ableton like sycophants to notice how buggy the beta was, or to acknowledge that for some of us it was really buggy.

I'll ask anyway, but at 2 million unique users I don't see me making any headway.

You talking Live 8? It was at that point the only version I didn't purchase on day one. My experience with the beta was so bad that I realized the new features weren't going to make up for it's instability. Before that, only the most buggy VST would crash Live here.

Most of the time I want my songs to sound the same every time I run it, but for jamming and generative stuff it can be fun to throw in some probabilistic variations.
Of course, for the most part you want to let it sound always the same...

But nonetheless it can create not obviously change of smaller details over time...
Nothing which jumps into your face when you listen to but it would miss if you take it away...

Second: the use of it as an idea generator...means record the output and then pick the piece(s) which you want to keep and use this/them repeatingly to have something you perhaps wouldn´t have come up with yourself respectively "controlled random"

Even Bitwig has the option to not let the random function run forever but repeat the last settings...

No. I purchased Live 12.
I’m quite lucky with Live. I don’t experience crashes (rarely on the iMac but not on Windows) even with M4L devices.
Perhaps I need to upgrade from Mojave eventually…

OK but in context I didn't think you meant that, because your purchase doesn't give you access to the beta.

No, just a decent saving.

Wasn’t it in 8 that they had to kill the some of the advertised features? - Yup, answered my own question here: https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/ab ... ve-suite-8

That was supposed to be the start of the collaboration features in Live.

It’s interesting to see the part about stability in the SOC review. I clearly remember the negative feedback about bugs, but I was one of the few who didn’t have any issues in 8 either. I was on a Windows machine then, but when I switched to a Mac, Live was too taxing on the CPU (apple defect) that I stopped using Live as a primary tool until 2010/11.

This is partially specualtion, but Ableton subsequently released M4L https://www.ableton.com/en/press/press- ... l-release/
It seemed to me that tags in Live for M4L were probably a likely culprit. It's always possible that the Windows port of Max cleaned up code before M4L but I do seem to recall as many Windows users being upset in the coming months.
the Apple defect, that might have actually been an Intel issue, I recall that there was a particular macbook pro that had a chip that had built in power management that was only "fixed" by a hack and subsequent OS update to keep the CPU active when using demanding apps like Live. By that time there was no difference of value in performance between OS considering it's the same CPUs, but that one chip was a problem.

If only Abes had listened to MW back then. I remember it well. I hope they consult him before releasing 12.

Anyone else mucking about with M4L MIDI Tools?

I made a 4 channel Euclidean generator (better than weird included one!) where you can choose the note for each channel. It's checking for a DrumRack in the track and pulling in the drumpad names for the note select menu (36:Bass Drum and suchlike)

I'm just using the currently selected track for now as I cant find a way to get the track via the generator/miditool itself. "path this_device canonical_parent" does not work (error on this_device)

Any ideas as to where a miditool/generator/transformer lives in the Live Object Model?
