A good reminder that I've gotten out of the habit of creating restore points before installing software, since I haven't had any issues like that for about a decade. And, of course, sometimes a restore doesn't fix things. Maybe I need to get more paranoid again.

I had no problems with any of it, except for having to unplug and replug my iLok key. Which does indicate that the R5 License Manager struggles with some issue with USB. Otherwise, it was fast and painless.

From the site, it looks like you can't just use iLok software, you have to have a key. It definitely wants to touch some kind of USB storage device.

What OS are you running, just as a data point?
Yeah, I did restore points, which is why I thought it had to be the machine until I did a complete format/reinstall. That was Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and it was a decision to go back to Win7 where I realized it was this licensing system and not the machine. It still runs W7.
My "Home" machine that I downloaded the demo on is W10, but I don't have an install disk for 10, so I'm not willing to even take the chance.

I'm on Win10, but earlier versions shouldn't make any difference. Though Win8 did suck pretty hard, imho. I was a network admin and had to pull it off of the few machines I trialed it on, with lots of software explosions. SP1 supposedly mostly fixed it, but I never went back to try again.

I walk away from the extremely rare software that bluescreens my machine, and would be horrified at something that blows up my USB bus.

Sorry this happened to you.

I've fooled around with it some more, and am finding more presets that I can modify to get closer to tones that I like. I have a more favorable impression than I did at first, but I'm still not finding any magic, just a competent sim.

I haven't played with their ACT stuff much yet, so maybe there's some magic in there. One issue may be that I've messed with too many sims over the years, and I'm just jaded.

Anyhow, I had the most complete version of Revalver 4 originally. It looks like all of that content came across. The only stuff left for me to buy is the new Headrush add-on at $49.99. It's a lot of content, so I may end up springing for it if my opinion about R5 continues to improve. Because I'm an addict.

I only had one ACT model and it hasn't come across for some reason.

Huh. I just now checked, and it looks like my ACT modules are demos, too. I don't remember how many there used to be, but I don't have access to any, and only three show as demos. There were more before, right?

....This is not the best rollout I've ever seen...

I'm trying so hard to like this software.

The more I do comparisons of the different packages, the odder it gets. Some of the pedals and amps have different names on the Headrush site than the ones used in the sim itself. They're similar enough to figure it out, but it's disconcerting. Feels like they didn't do a final run-through before release.

I should have already had all of the Peavey-specific models, I think, but some in the Peavey list on the web site show as demos in the sim.

ACT isn't really a thing anymore, except for the hangover naming of the ACT Combo and the ACT Rack. But there is now a thing called clones. Unclear what the tech is for that. Maybe all the code from Headrush hardware?

Here's a vid by the Studio Rats, who are pretty respected. Looks like it might be a bit of an explainer. I'm a little too burnt to watch it right now. Will look in the morning.

The words I used were shit show. That confirms for me that there is a problem. Their support is slow though so it won't be fun to sort out.

Looks like they crossed some wires with programming the permissions for the ACT models... interesting

Yeah... It's kinda annoying. I imagine doubly so if you're out in the wild with a laptop and no free USB ports remaining.

Requirements from their site: A free USB port and a USB device which to lock license or a USB device already in use (existing dongle audio interface, hard drive, etc.)
Hard pass.

I already have an iLok permanently plugged in so I released my old locking device and used that as the new hardware locking device.

I purchased everything over time for v4 so looking at the options, I think the HeadRush Bundle is what I should be considering.

Yeah, that's my take on it, too. I checked the comparison lists for the various versions of R5, and looked in the desktop app at the gear I owned vs. the gear that was listed as demos, and it looks like that is exactly the overlap.

On another note -- it does look like the ACT tech survived. The In section lets you capture your guitar sound, then uses it to simulate different pickups or acoustic guitars. The Out section lets you capture your raw amp and cab sounds, presumably something like Tonex and Kemper. Maybe the Clones that they talk about in the various add-on packages are captures? If so, they need to open up the ability to trade captures like Tonex and Kemper do. It looks like there isn't a place for that.

I think I'm going to step away from this thing right now, but I suspect I'll end up getting the Headrush pack after the holidays and fooling with it some more. I haven't had any of the problems that some other people have reported here, and I already have a handy iLok.

None of the tones I've heard so far are seductive, but I think there may just be a learning curve involved. Maybe they just need better presets. I do want them to succeed. I have fond memories of R4.

And they need to document everything a hell of a lot better. It looks like the information can be found, but it's scattered and feels incomplete.

As I've said they badly need to lose the USB thing if they want a broad appeal. Listening to those presets, they're OK, not earth-shattering
...
I've been trying out a few amp sims recently and found some really good freebies that are comparable if not better.

I might be tempted by revalver but only if they change the authorisation

I did contact InMusic about the licensing. Apparently, it is quite good for them so,
