Seems like everyone and there mother is producing ambient these days, especially around these parts.

Just curious... and I don't mean to offend anyone by saying this, but what makes everyone flock the ambient genre? Is it because you can just load up a reaktor ensemble, press random, crossfade a few samples and call a tune? Or you just sit there fiddling with a sound, drown it in FX and think you're the greatest? Instant gratification maybe? Again, I stress I'm not trying to offend anyone... But it's very strange that all of a sudden ambient is the new trance (you know what I mean). I hear some great ambient here and I hear a lot very poor ambient.

I do ambient stuff too, have for about 7 or 8 years now... but more soundtrack/eno/classic stuff. So please, don't think I'm against you. I realy am 'one of you'. :hihi: Just getting a bit old lately... You know well-known saying, "Once everyone's doing it, it's not cool anymore."

Is ambient the new fashion???

I just like to explore sounds and noise from the less is more point of view.

I saw some blokes playing guitar the other day and I thought "bugger all... there goes my special little world."

well I used to dye my hair and play guitar. next thing you know EVERYONE was dying their hair and playing guitar. so obviously I couldn't do that any more. so I started making ambient music. now EVERYONE is making ambient music.

I guess I'll try bluegrass next. as long as you think that's uncool.

C'mon now... I'm being serious. You gotta admit ambient has grown to be the new trend around here... and I'm just curious to know "why"?

And guitar is a instrument, not a genre. ;)

I have been listening to it quite awhile now, almost thirty years that it has had a run, I still like it in it's many forms. The term ambient does not have the same meaning as it was once defined as, Background music really.
Maybe it is the name that needs to be changed instead, it covers alot of ground these days. 8)

Why are you getting so defensive Intel? I'm merely asking a question.

Post

I'm not getting defensive. I'm just amused that you seem to present the growth of the genre as a bad thing. like people are encroaching on your sacred ground, or something. personally I think its great that people who have been doing this sort of thing for years are finally finding the audience they've sought for their endeavors. and even better that its appealing to new fans, who are trying their hand at it. maybe in 10 years time electronic music message boards will be reduced to a seemingly endless line of kids posting threads seeking advice on obtaining "that 'woosh' sound in ambient music" and disgruntled music curmudgeons will look down their nose at "ambient kids" the way we do tarnce kids today.

that's an entertaining thought.

Wow, I've been wondering the same thing. I've been feeling like the weird kid around here. If you consider Vangelis ambient, I write a little.

Of course I'm not trying to imply that people are trending on 'my' ground... Cause it's most certainly not. I also think its great that people exploring sound and creating reaktor ensembles and all that. I, personally, find it a bit strange that an exccessive ammount of 'ambient producers' sudden appear out of the wood work. Once again, I'm just curious as to what has sparked this new flock of people. Simple as that Intel... I'm not attacking anyone, or 'trying' to judge anyone. I can not help it if you take my question out of context.

Post

oh. well if your question is "what has sparked this new flock of people?" then I wouldn't see where slagging off reaktor ensembles would make a difference.

this:
Is it because you can just load up a reaktor ensemble, press random, crossfade a few samples and call a tune? Or you just sit there fiddling with a sound, drown it in FX and think you're the greatest?
didn't strike me as "wow, this is a positive change that I'm curious to explore" as much as "I'm a pretentious jerk who's trying to take the piss out of newer ambient artists". if you're just having problems conveying your point, then I apologize for taking your post the wrong way. if you're just here to make yourself feel better for thinking you've been at this longer than the more active members of KVR, then...

Well you got me completely wrong, intel. I never said anything was wrong with the stated approaches. It only appears to be a common practice. Hell, I build most of my atmospheres in metaphysical function... If there was anything 'wrong' with doing that, then I wouldn't.

Post

well, if I've got you wrong, then I apologize. the original post just struck me as insulting to some of the artists here whom I've become fans of over the past few months.

I'll bugger off to another thread and cause trouble there, now. 8)
