Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Fri Apr 28, 2023 2:25 pm Yeah, I should clarify that ValhallaDelay's default mode (Tape, Past) is based on a Space Echo, but it's obviously not a 1:1 Space Echo emulation. It's got no spring reverb. Different EQ controls. Different controls in general. Sounds incredible though.

If you want a 1:1 for Space Echo, there are lots of options, everyone seemingly with different favorites. Some options include:

1. AudioThing OuterSpace (my personal fav)
2. Modnetic
3. Arturia
4. IK Multimedia
5. UAD

...I'm probably even missing some.
The Valhalla space echo is great, but if there are longs echos with a lot of feedback it gets quite a harsh crunch, and doesn't degrade and saturate as nicely as it might.

I actually think the UAD has great tape degradation.

The recent Softube one also has an excellent tape sound. Different flavour than a space echo but very good.

Perhaps not so surprising after all considering the vastly different kinds of music there are...

And different things work in different contexts.

I once spent ages swapping out a cubase delay with UAD space echo afte I got it. The tape echo definitely 'sounds hetter', but after I switched a whole bunch of delays I had messed up the sound of the track. The clean cubase delay was just what was needed and sounded best. Quite the lesson.

I learn this annoying lesson over and over again - nothing sounds good on everything. But in 2023, almost everything meets a certain quality threshold, and will have a place eventually if you give it a chance for long enough.

VVV sounds more mix ready to me. Bright Hall is my go to on vocals basically

V Plate is actually kinda cool! it has many different plate options for sound design!

I love the drum air in vintage verb for vocals!

I feel that the Large Room, Large Chamber and Dark Chamber modes are the best representatives of the "room" side of VahallaRoom, and the rest of the modes are good at bright and spacey (Bright Room, LV-426) or dark and deep (Dark Room, Dark Space).
I've been doing some careful listening tests of reverbs recently. I've had Valhalla Room for a couple of years and not really used it, partly because of the common sense idea that VVV has more mojo. Actually, the degree of modulation that Room offers is a lot greater than VVV, and so one can do far more alien/cosmic spaces in Room. And this is particularly the case when it comes to the ER section, Room can modulate/detune to an extreme degree which is the total opposite of a naturalistic approach.

Just to make sure: It was actually Sean who wrote that, not me - I was only quoting him.

You guys are way too nice, I think. ;)

Ok, it's probably true that some stuff works better in different context/music. But, some people, especially the hobbyists on sites like these simply have no taste. Sorry for saying it bluntly. If I read what some people like, and what they consider to be "great sounding" here, then I seriously have to doubt their ability of judgment. Not because of my golden ears, but, some of the stuff I read here on a daily base is really totally obvious.

On Instagram Sean Costello posted an image of a forthcoming update to V Room. The only difference that I could see in the screenshot was an extra parameter in the early reflections section labelled 'Space'. This is good because it seemed that VVV was the only verb to be getting updates in more recent years.

Awesome. I've realised that this reverb fills certain roles involving modulation better than my other alternatives, but I also get the impression that the early reflections could be improved.

Of course, a few additional tweaks would make it compete more directly with Liquidsonics stuff, notably to have a ducking control for the late section.

VVV is the most cpu efficient reverb I have ever used. And it is excellent sounding reverb. I am not a perfectionist, It does the job for me.

Do Valhalla reverbs have ducking?
I’m interested in VV. (if it has ducking).
