Fantastic sounds. Better than Behringer Edge?

Good point. They're about the same price.

There's also the Neutron.

Kobol can obviously do a ton of things Edge can't. I just wonder if its drum sounds are better than the Edge or DFAM, or if there's something about the sequencer in the Edge and DFAM that make them special for drum patterns.

Kobol can definitely do drum sounds (as shown above) and has both a noise generator and a flexible attenuator (with two pots to control it!); however I would not say it's best use would be drums.

The Kobol actually is pretty impressive in its modulation options.

Special isn't really the right word, but, that's what I like about edge. At the end of the day there's nothing magical about using analog synths to create vintage analog drum sounds. I do this regularly with modules. What we're talking about here is how much space in the rack and how many dollars do you want to dedicate to particular drum sounds? Further, how do you want to play them?

So, the Behringer synths modules like Kobol shine here if you are using some other sequencer because they have midi and have a nice spacious layout with enough patching to create some non-standard routings. What you see in the video is the performer tweaking the knobs in real time for some of the sound variation, cool.

I'm on the fence on Kobol. I will probably end up getting one because the original has a 2040 filter. The Bobol cannot have a 2040 filter. It may have the new recreation of the chip, but it's not a 70s 2040. Now, that may be moot to many. But I already have new 2040 based filters in my modular and I don't like them as much as the 70s 2040 in my Cat. No, I have not done enough testing to be able to answer definitively why, and that's probably why I'll buy a Kobol.

But, and it's a big but. For me, the real value of the edge is the sequencer. Yes, I can use a modular step sequencer, but it's the balance of integration and chosen patch points that makes the edge a nice performance instrument. Yes, the snappy envelopes in Edge are great, and yes, it's annoying that they aren't more flexible.

I play the sequencer as much as I play the synth. I don't treat Edge as a drum sound generator but as a single drum line synthesizer. Using the sequencer to make subtle ghost notes is what makes it sing. I have a second Edge incoming to go with my RD6. Keep in mind that I really like subtle minimal techno and this has an impact on my choices.

For me, DFAM is stupidly overpriced and I don't like the form factor. But that's just my opinion man, so whatever.

So, yes, the combination of the 2040 filter and the snappy more flexible envelopes might make the Kobol a good choice as a drum sound source. For me though, it's more a complement to the Edge, not a replacement, and the size is a bit of a drawback.

I also really like the B.MS20 for drum/rolling bass sounds.

Bobol vs. Bedge!

BS-20 might be too on the nose.

Bruh

I almost want to make a "Bruh" sticker for mine. Or maybe "Broham." Or just paint its P in Pro-1 into being a B.

K2 is probably a drum monster, but haven't messed with it yet. Also, the Drumlogue is getting more and more attractive as the cost comes down.

Bruh...

You can get used Minilogues really really cheap now too. I was surprised how much I liked their sound. The Aphex Synth

I have the Minilogue XD desktop version, but the original version (silver coloured) is like £371 currently which is a steal. And unlike the Kobol and others, it's still polyphonic.
