I tend to agree with the statement of SOME people just letting their vst's randomly outputting and then uploading only to talk later about eq etc. But if these people were wiring up hardware and using the mixing desk and hardware effects in the composition would that be less so random? Therefore if the same applied to software would that be classed as composition or random?

The electronic stuff I do is basically in the same vein of what I was doing twenty years ago with synths;the only thing that's changed is that the instruments are much more capable(and I hope I'm a bit more accomplished
)
I started doing electronic stuff as an outlet from the guitar driven indie rock my bands were doing. It was nice to write things where I DIDN'T have to write lyrics,or worry about the singer telling me that she won't sing what I wrote,or deal with drunken bass players,or...
It's still nice to get away from all that

I'm confused also. Ambient seems to mean 1) cool floaty stuff like vangelis, or 2) some kind of new trance.androidlove wrote:Wow, I've been wondering the same thing. I've been feeling like the weird kid around here. If you consider Vangelis ambient, I write a little.
Does the new ambient have drums and a definite rhythm? If so, I'm not sure that's ambient in a classical sense. Maybe whigged-out trance would be a better name? Can the original poster give some examples of something we can download? I'm still looking for some explaination of what the heck trance is, and now I feel I'll never find out because ambient will be the new truth and it won't mean that vangelis is making a comeback.

Where is all this trance talk coming about? The only reference I made to trance was that there are just as many posts, thought not looked down upon on. Just like trance was ever so popular here, now it's ambient.Mo Verdigast wrote:I'm confused also. If evolution had any sense to it, it'll soon be people bashing ambient!

Sorry, I misunderstood. A lot of new ambient sounds a lot like trance. So maybe you could give us an example? Is it like the music Bluedad makes or what?ahja wrote:Where is all this trance talk coming about? To be optimistic
, maybe people are finally starting to look inward, and ambient music is the perfect soundtrack to introspection. But this is an extreme over-statement as ambient music is far, far from popular...
IMO, there's a lot of mediocre and very poor stuff in the genre simply because it is much more forgiving than others, in that there's no musical form to adhere to, and the like...
And another thing is ambient music as a category. Some people seem to think that ambient is any music that has pads in it...

I'm a bit reluctant to say I'm an ambient composer, because I'm not trying to ease someone into an atmosphere.
I'm a bit reluctant to say I'm a dark-ambient composer, because my stuff isn't just dark for the sake of creating a dark atmosphere.
I would say I compose lynch style-movie music. That is to say my music aims to mess with your head the way David Lynch messes with your eyes.
Or maybe I'm being pretentious? Seems plausible. Maybe I'm trying to come at ambient from a different angle.
I don't know, and I don't care. All I can say is I prefer a forum bloated with ambient tracks than the world around me thats bloated with mediocrity.

i think the reason everyone took offense was the way you asked your question?
i must admit i feel something akin to the creation of trance music -Grab a few drum and bass loops, match em up and put a few gated chords and a warbly synth lead on top- not exactly Stravinsky. But with each new genre, there is the lowest common denominator.
Perhaps to your question, people are finding ambient music to fit in with their writing skills, or perhaps it is something on a more spirtual level. One thing to remember however, there was no electric guitar music before Rickenbacker, there was no synth music before Moog. A new music genre always explores the new technology. Perhaps it is the introduction of VSTi-VST/DXi and the low cost of DAWs?
No diclaimers of self inclusion can negate the bent of this question.ahja wrote:Is it because you can just load up a reaktor ensemble, press random, crossfade a few samples and call a tune? Or you just sit there fiddling with a sound, drown it in FX and think you're the greatest? Instant gratification maybe?

Ive always done ambient sounds beneath layers of my songwriting, its always been a part of it, and I've never considered it to even have that label, so I dont even call it that
