do you have any examples?
preferably actual hits we will know, not some obscure german rock act from 1987.

often times, not always, the kick and snare have different roles. the kick will hold the pulse, while the snare is for accents.
also, different genres will have very different and recognisable tropes, eg death metal drums are very different to hard rock drums.
I hear it all the time on tv, on the radio etc. It is everywhere, but I don't know any specific songs because I shun today's music. I don't even know the names of current artists.

Somehow it seems that in the West everyone thinks a song needs to have drums, specifically a kick and a snare.

With drums we have drummers.
With drummers, we have drummer jokes.
What's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine?

When people are talking about kick and snares, it's western pop music, as opposed to western music, isn't it?

My last album had no drums on it. The next one (out soon) has some "percussion" on only one of the tracks. A lot of my favourite music atm has little or no drums whatsoever.

I actually admire good drummers and percussionists, the way they coordinate their limbs as if they were independent from each other, not run by the same brain.

That's exactly why I posted the Bozzio vid. He's a master at that. I don't listen to him to hear a good drum groove, heck just listen to the hi hat. Watch the vid and listen to the hat. It's a f**king spot on metronome amidst everything else he's doing.
