While open source is awesome, it is totally ok for a person, or company to sell a product. Its ok to support developers, everyone needs to care for themselves and their family. The issue with private equity, is a companies vision can get hampered by sales requirements. If you dont hit those numbers, you are kinda screwed, and so are your customers. Ive worked, and left companies that were "acquired". The downfall of these companies is a slow process, but a process regardless. From my research, I could only find that a few DAW developers, and a pretty good handfull of plugin companies are privately owned, with no private equity financial history. As a matter of principal for me, and my own experience with how private equity is a virus on humanity, I choose not to support companies who are owned in this way.Borbolactic wrote: Thu Dec 14, 2023 5:54 pm Crony-capitalism's a 'dead man walking'. As much as we might love Native Instruments' or U-He's plugs and/or the folks behind them, any biz-- and that's almost all-- that works within that model is also 'dead', just that they, along with the superset crony-capitalist model, haven't hit the pavement yet-- 'they don't know it yet'. 'Everything's fine, until it isn't.'
There are those, perhaps including John Zerzan and/or the late David Graeber, who suggest that the best and only model that might work is a gift economy. If so, the sooner we can get it, the better.
Software like Linux, Surge XT, Cardinal, Vital/Vitalium and the recent Vaporizer, as related software, seem to function more in that sort of spirit.
Sad state of Native Instruments

I like what image line stands for, free updates for life. Now they are offering subscription model for cloud and mastering. I would think that their PE Firm thought that was a nifty idea to bring in more revenue. Again, its a slow role, but the sales requirements always find a way to catch up with companies who have a PE parent. UAD Luna is another one to look out for, and its free.

I received a reply from NI about Native Access not downloading for me. Unfortunatly they only asked me for information I had already supplied to support, and a copy of a log file which I have now also provided. It's like they don't actually read support requests, but send an automatic response instead

They are currently running a user survey on their site. Is it about what users want to see in the future? How to improve their current products? No, of course not. It’s about how much they can charge for future subscription services.

At least you got a reply, even if it was useless. They have a habit of simply not answering when they're not busy asking for information you already supplied. NI's support is terrible.thecontrolcentre wrote: Thu Dec 14, 2023 10:43 pm I received a reply from NI about Native Access not downloading for me. I still don't know why I can't log into the forum. It keeps telling me it can't find my email address yet I get spam almost every day from them.

Is it worth upgrading K13 ultimate to K14 ultimate or collectors edition?

I got a message from NI today about Native Access. It no longer supports Win 8.1 ... so I can't authorise any of the Kontakt instruments I bought over BF week without upgrading my computer.sjm wrote: Wed Dec 20, 2023 12:06 pmAt least you got a reply, even if it was useless. The "new" Native Access is not supported on my "ancient" 10.13.6 Mac Pro. I can't update anything Native Instruments unless I get a new computer (10.13 is the end of the line for my Mac Pro) with a "modern" OS.thecontrolcentre wrote: Thu Dec 21, 2023 4:38 amI got a message from NI today about Native Access. Do you know about Open Core Legacy Patcher? It'll allow you to install newer versions of Mac OS on older Macs. Obviously search around for people using it on configs similar / older than yours to get an idea of likely performance.parma wrote: Thu Dec 21, 2023 5:00 am The "new" Native Access is not supported on my "ancient" 10.13.6 Mac Pro. Love neither and find workarounds. Remember, if they're going to shaft people with refusal to activate, that's when "alternative activation methods" are arguably LEGAL in many countries.I don't know who to love more - Apple or NI
