Cubase SX, dumb (newbie) questions

hello. quite new to sx, having previously used VST. Have a couple of questions that I would appreciate help with.

1) Being more track type choices in SX, can you tell me what sort of track I should create for a Vsti - eg Dr-008? Midi track?

2) Supposing midi track is correct answer for the above, - as I have already been using midi tracks for vsti's, what do I use as the reference point within the mixer? Ie - DR-008 brings up a midi track fader, plus an aux fader, plus other faders., all relating to one thing?

Basically, as on vst I expect to see a L+R fader for DR-008, that's all?

PS - please go easy with me on busses etc, I am still trying to understand that concept.

All that should be created when you load a VST is a VST Instrument channel in your mixer. You create a midi track to send data out to your VSTi.

Post

right click-add track MIDI
F11-vst intrument rack-add instrument
main window-MIDI out-pick the vst chosen
outputs-F3-look for the instrument in the mixer

You'll get the hang of it pretty quick.

In the mixer you'll get (at least*) one AUDIO output per (instance of a) VST.

But, there's also a MIDI channel per VSTi in the mixer.

* If you use a multiple out VSTi (like DR-008) you'll get more audio tracks for that instrument.

VSTi's like that allow you to route, say, a bass drum to a 2nd output, the advantage being you can route it to effects separately.

thanks, for now though, I just want to see single fader chanels for each vsti. So, do I hide the midi channels or hide the vsti channels?

Depends, they have a different function.

The MIDI mixer channels only effect MIDI being sent to the VSTi.
Lower the fader and the MIDI volume goes down.
You can insert MIDI effects here.

The audio mixer channels do audio stuff with the audio output of your VSTi.

There's a bug in the previous SX2 version that should be cured by the recent SX2 update IIRC.
You can set individual audio mixer channels to "Can Hide" and hide 'em all with the icon on the left. Only, these "Can Hide" settings got garbled after saving with the mixer opened and re-opening the project.

Loading a VSTi only creates VST mixer entries. It doesn't create MIDI tracks. You assign Midi tracks to a loaded VSTi instrument that you wish to control with that track.

In the DR-008 configuration screen it lets you decide how many VSTi faders/outs will be created. It also lets you decide if they are stereo or mono tracks. This config determines how many of those faders get created on your mixer window. Also, each pad of the dr-008 can then be routed to any of the available outs. So, you can have kick go to one and snare to another and cymbals to a third. There are obvious reasons to do this.

Once you have configured the minimum number that you need, you can then further limit what shows up on your Mixer by using the hide function of the mixer tracks. I can't imagine wanting to have drums go to 1 L/R out, but you can accomplish that easily.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

thanks for that. Think I have it now. Another question that is befuddling me,

How can I align the grid in the key editor to the grid in the main project window? For example, I record say 4 bars in the project window, from pos 101 01 000 to 501 .....

Then, when I click on the event and get to the key editor I find that the grid is on a much larger scale? I have looked through the manual but cannot find out how to sort this out???

One question:
Did you really read the manual?
Or wasn't there any manual in your "version" ?

I recommend to take a look at the "Getting into details" documentation. It's all explained here. Read it completely!

ps: The grids are independant in the editors. There is a popup to switch it. This is the standard way since Cubase VST 3 (and probably earlier).

Two questions there. Now, what you really meant to say was "one assumption". That assumption being I have a pirate copy.

Sorry, no. It's Sx2.2 legit. Let me ask you something: -

Right then, see that Boeing 747 over there? I want you to fly it please. Here's the manual, go and do it. What do you mean you need help? Just RTFM you ignorant shit.

If you're a pilot - don't mess your brain with another longtime learning profession. :hihi:

Just Right mouse click on the time scale an choose time that fits your needs( in my opinion bits & samples are the best for midi writing ).

Hang on guys, this is a pretty legit question something I have been meaning to ask for ages when I do it and it's not automatically zoomed to my selected range i just mess about with the zoon tools and get it right, alot of pissing around tho.

And by the way Yes i am a legit cubase sx 1, 2, 3 etc.. user and I HATE manuals :x , just because some of you who do like to read don't realise that to some it's would be more enjoyable to munch on horse shit, I even used SADIE systems when i was media radio producing and never touched the manual once and I got along ok (actually ...eh hem... I was station producer 8) but i don't wanna brag :) ) . I have had a look for the answer to the original question anyway and couldn't find anything, so come on guys stop starting a fight :box: and help 2 brothers out here we are going crazy :bang:
