To my ears it sounds like the mix becomes wider and the compression gets turned up to 11 but any suggestions welcomed

I just heard parts out in the edges to give that momentary zing!!
But I will admit that I was also kinda shaking my head at yet another band trying to do a Judas Priest parody. That said, this is better than many, once you accept how faux it all feels.
Actually, yes I think they do meddle with the levels too. There are several changes one after another. Contrived but effective in this situation.
