The Pulsar Mu has 5ms Latency at 44khz.
The HCL Islander reports 0ms.
MJUC-jr also 0ms.
Those 5ms are not exactly feasible for realtime-play uses.
Which is where i have my focus on.

I tried most of them and still prefer the usability, versatility and sound of Mjuc. I don't do mix buss compression as such though (I use a vari-mu as a gain rider on the accompaniment + fx submix) so it might depend on what you want from it.
Still the fact that you can dial in the distortion, color and character to your liking comes very handy when you're trying to get a certain balance between character and clarity in the mix.

i can only refer to, what the host is reporting. From there, that´s so not the case.
let´s leave out just a few samples of latency.
I can check, ....refering to a sample rate of 44khz: ( - and what´s been reported from Host - )
UAD 670 = 86 samples / 2ms (most UADs are in that ballpark)
MJUC jr = 0 samples / 0ms
HCL Islander = 0 samples / 0ms
APU loudness Compressor has for example 441 samples / 10ms
Empirical Labs Arouser has 0 samples / 0ms
for realtime play uses, this sums up quite quickly if one would not take care of that aspect.
Overall speaking, is it for what i mostly do a neccessity to turn away from anything doing 2ms or more. Even those 2ms are in the big picture allready too much.
Kush TWK has for example 4ms. This one is right now not replacable for me. But i´m working on it.
Now check, how much you have to spend to bring your Audio interface 4ms down !
Thanks for the input !
I guess i´ll park my GAS, going for the MJUC.

I like the UAD 670 one.
The Waves PuigChild is as well quite good, but a bit more coloured.

Pulsar Mu sharpens the overall sound on the masterbus quite a bit. Great on a dull mix, but if you mix midrangey, it can be too much sparkle.
UAD Fairchild is a lot smoother.

I have no idea what a real Fairchild 670 sounds like on master bus.
I remember a while back hunting for a Vari-mu like plugin.
I settled on SPL's 'Iron' a modern Vari-mu emulation and Soundevice's 'Royal Compressor' for an a more old school "gooy gluey" sound.
In testing Waves 'PuigChild' it is very good, and could be push really hard, breaks up like a tube amp, so does Airwindows Vai-mu a good free one.
The worse one for me was the Pulsar Mu, pushed too hard goes into hard clipping and sounding like a plugin, not like any hardware.
But these days I have fallen in love with Neve style/Diode-Bridge compressor emulations, the tighter lowend and smack, suits me more than the gooy smooth Varimu's.
I love Voosteq's Model N at the moment.
These are just my thoughts.

That one is right now down from its normal (fantasy? ) price of $100, to $19

+1. stereo on 2bus, grey MDE on channels. more on the subtle side but Fuse Audio 25a is also nice.Vortifex wrote: Sun Dec 24, 2023 5:56 pm DDMF MagicDeathEye. I try others, but I keep coming back to it.
for tube harmonics without compression Cassiopeia is really nice too.
tried Islander and comp.two, cool but didn't feel any benefit over the others
