Kazrog True Dynamics gives a few interesting flavours; I also have IRON, a couple from Fuse Audio and the T-Racks Fairchild/Manley sims.

MJUC gets more use than the rest put together. Second place is Fuse VCL-864.

IRON gives me trouble with gainstaging; it is configured to do subtle compression with hot signals (for mastering). I find it has to be set quite extreme in order to get an obvious/exaggerated action on individual tracks at my usual levels. The stepped output gain makes volume matching difficult without an external tool such as Letimix gainmatch.

How do you rate Process.Audio CompTwo against Wargrove HCL Islander?

I have Islander, but don’t tend to reach for it often.
I only just got it recently (like yesterday) but I love it! Probably a little honeymoon-ish to list so quickly but ah well :) Have not compared directly against Islander - will report back when I do. Vari-Mu is my favourite bus compression type for smoothness - I love the way they push back against the ebb and flow of the music so well. It's all about that program-dependent dynamic Ratio.
Nice, thanks!

Did you find it on sale somewhere?

i refuse, cause of the 5ms latency.

CPU load is less than the HCL Islander

Yes. This one is the best.

When it's works it's almost like magic. Great on busses.

martinjuenke wrote: Sun Dec 24, 2023 8:27 pm I like the UAD 670 one.
The Waves PuigChild is as well quite good, but a bit more coloured.
I dont have UAD but the Waves one is nice.

IK also do a Manley Vari Mu,, Neold do a U17 a real early version of the circuit type, conversely SPL is a really flexible modern approach to variable mu type of compression. Waves also has their RS124 which is another early approach to the design. Well, after the engineers at Abbey Roads finished modifying it a the time.

I would definitely go with UAD Fairchild or Pulsar Mu. Pulsar Mu also has a robust sidechain eq section so you don't have to worry about it sounding too bright or whatever. It's easy to dial in and super versatile. It's honestly hard to beat Universal Audio soundwise though. Just my 2 cents.

MJUC

I don't like the sound of the Pulsar one, and think MJUC is better than the UAD Fairchild when I compared. Just set the MJUC model 1 super tame so the needle is barely moving at all if you want something more Fairchild-y.

Don't have Magic DeathEye as I honestly don't use a vari-mu vari often compared to VCA or LA3A, etc. I did the demo long ago and should probably compare it and the stereo one to MJUC again some day.

I ended up using the Arouser for the quick transients and a HCL Islander afterwards for the patches i thought a Vari-Mu would be the correct thing.
Seems sometimes a good idea to use both behind each other.
Thats mostly for the "instrument patches" pre the creative FX.

i have quite a hard time to "feel" the soft Mu compressors.
But it´s better now with the Islander.

Not doing anything EDM.
Just realtime-play Instrument patches with some "creative FXing" behind it.
I try to get a as good as possible soundniveau diectly at realtimeplay level.

An interesting Q would be:

where are you folks seeing rsp. using a vari-Mu comp ?
What type of specific usecases ?
