Im not. I know that what I do might get described as 'dark ambient' or whatnot, but its not what Im doing.

Anyone?
I apply the term dark ambient in a very over generalized manner to *some* of my stuff..I labor under a lack of an applicable genre title to actually apply it to..

I remember bitching about a lack of proper genre description a few months ago..I was pissed because the term 'Horror-Core' had been snatched up by the hip-hop-rap scene..

In my own mind, I always label what I do as tension excercises. I guage the rate of success by the reactions I recieve when I upload here.

Maybe we should coin our own genre title & break away from the 'ambient' thing..I personally don't like using the label myself, but don't know how else to describe it..

"Atmospherics"?

I dunno..f**k it..

:P

Funnily enough, I felt the same way when I found that out as well.

Yeah. That and write a Manifesto ;)

I'm not a BIG fan of ambient either, but I do like the fact it's there. People like vurt and Phz and Whyterrabyt and all - they're making ambient 'rebelious' almost? Lure you in to nice tones, and hit you over the head with a chainsaw sound or something. Or vice versa. So it's ALOT different than Eno's 'Music For Airports' these days - I would term a majority of supposedly 'ambient' music here and abroad simply 'experimental' myself? But I do think the term 'ambient' is in a fashionable vogue these days.
It lets the listener know they can light up a joint, have it on in the background, or turn up the volume on their headphones. To say 'Experimental' just doesn't have the same 'inviting ring' to it. Sounds scientific, boring, out to prove something. Ambient simply condones a 'no strings attached' type of expectation.

And I still say The Velvet Undeground was more 'psychedelic' than The Greatful Dead, but it was the Dead Heads that really defined 'psychedelia' as we know it. And again - 'Psychedelic' is just way more inviting than 'avant-rock', 'art-rock' and all that. So I say 'Ambient' has that wide open mystique about it now too. Could mean incense and lava lamps, could mean bay windows over looking lush landscapes, could mean a basement with a beatnik and a easel.
Ambient covers a wide texture of releaxed and creative people... And in this day of political, social, and economic strife - it's only going to get bigger. ;)

Re: whyterabbyt -- Not at the moment, but when playing with CSound, it seems fitting and natural to make ambient kinds of sounds. Soundscape seems to be the word du jour in CSound (as it has for the past n+1 jours).

CSound, as everyone knows, is the easiest, most mindless way to slap together a quick abmient/curnk/tarnce hit number by clicking a few buttons and throwing a lever. Everyone ought to try it.

That's all its good for. Music by numbers, that's all it is.

Although real crunkists use Fortran-IV. With Hollerith descriptors.

KVR is at least not a totally wrong place to start your search... :hihi:

Hm. I'm not a big fan of ambient music so far. Maybe, I've not yet found the right CD to start with. What's a track/CD or whatever you would recommend for someone who wants to get to know this genre? Something I simply gotta listen to before I can say "I know ambient music"?

Oh there's clubs around that make opium dens look like Woolworths. Atleast in this town. ;) And all they do is play 'ambient tones' all night. Wasted hotties that are trying to relax abound inside. I can only hope this style will spread for one and all.

Think of the Korova Milk Bar without the white.
Coming to a city near you! ;) (Pardon the pun)
