Granular effects are really hard to predict and tame. I have Silo and Fragments. But I would rather do granular stuff in a granular synth, such as Dawesome Novum. You will get more musical and usable stuff, rather than some abstract nonsense.

Well, "abstract nonsense" notwithstanding, and not to hijack this thread, but I've been really enjoying this. Can even be used in the free version of Voltage Modular, and it's on sale for $29. The last link (below) is to the manual and a nice dive into granular synthesis, which may be an interesting read for those so inclined.

agreed, my vote goes also to Portal.
Which does not mean it has to be useful for other folks.

Yet, i would not compare any of the three vs. each other at all.
( not sure what SILO all can do, since i stopped using it after just a few minutes )

while i can see where it´s coming from,. i find this a bit of a stretch.

you can jam down "abstract nonense" to a recording, cut (short) samples out of it, et voilà, what was garbage first, might turn into gold. Where do you want draw the line....?
Somebody trained to such a workflow, could even reach by plan for some garbage, and could even hear while doing, which part of the nonsense might become the gold (post cutting). ( i have been into such workflows in my MPC1000 days)

I found Portal's included presets not the best and was quite disappointed when I slipped through all of them. I found that getting third party presets to be key (besides of course creating your own). I produce Trap beats and like Portal presets from HZE and DZM to be much more suited for me than any of the included presets. Regarding Portal vs Fragments: I found Fragments to be more musical but Portal is perfect to f**k things up in a more crazy way (which makes it better for Trap). Can't say anything about Silo as I don't know it.

Tough decision but in the end I decided to get Portal over Fragments.
