New Gear's Resolutions

I just made a list of my gear. It was... instructive, a little bit shocking, and a good motivator for reminding myself not to buy stuff. So I'll officially extend my "I don't need more delays/reverbs" to "I don't need more stuff, period, unless it's unique and exceptional."
I'm not going to list it all here, just the counts:
MODULAR:
Eurorack: 40 modules, 0-Ctrl, and a small assortment of 0HP stuff
VCV Rack: 49 modules marked "favorite", plus many others
Bitwig Grid: all the stuff it has...
HARDWARE:
Basses: 2 active, 2 retired
Kalimba: 1
Desktop synths: 3
Weird Devices: 3
Hardware FX: 2
Retired hardware instruments: at least 3 I can think of plus crappy guitars, lots of assorted percussion etc. that almost never gets used.
SOFTWARE: (counting only my "active" list -- others are installed but unlisted, or not installed).
Synths: 25
Chorus/Mod/Pitch: 23
Delay: 13
Reverb: 19
Distortion: 8
Lo-fi: 16
Spectral: 5
Dynamics: 11
EQ / Filter: 13
Saturation: 8
Repair/Noise Reduction: 2
Also I should point out that in my hardware I have multiple ways to do delay, reverb, chorus, flanger, distortion, filtering, there's a frequency shifter, spectral FX, lo-fi etc.

None of those things are really what's stopping you from finishing the music...bmanic wrote: Sun Dec 31, 2023 7:08 am Surely I will be able to finally make some finished music? Right? RIGHT????![]()
My hope is you will find the true blocker, defeat it, and get something finished!
Just pick your best unfinished track, write a short list of what you need to do to finish it, then finish it.
Done is better than perfect!

That’s exactly what I do when working on a track. As soon as I can start to see the final version on the horizon, I start listening through it repeatedly and writing down an itemized list and notes for what needs to be fixed, added, automated, etc. Once the initial list is checked off, I do it again, and possibly once more for the finer details. I have pages and pages of these notes in various notebooks for songs I’ve finished over the past 20 years, and I actually just did this last night for a song I’m finishing this week. It works for me._leras wrote: Tue Jan 02, 2024 11:41 am Just pick your best unfinished track, write a short list of what you need to do to finish it, then finish it.

try not to buy too much. (with differing definitions of too much, depending on the mood im in)
make as much noise as possible.
use everything, at least once. keeping a list of whats been used.
tidy cables up.
sort table out.

Isn't that considered blasphemous conduct punishable by ouster from the modular cult... I mean, community?

i wish i was joking
all my short ones have fallen down the gap. using meter long cables for sockets which are pretty much next to each other.

I'm going to sell all of the guitars that I don't really like, keep the one cheap as chips partscaster that I play, and buy myself "the last guitar."

I use a cable hanger and one color per length, and I've chosen cables based on how neatly they hang from the hanger. But I'm already a modular heretic because I like softwarecryophonik wrote: Tue Jan 02, 2024 9:31 pm Isn't that considered blasphemous conduct punishable by ouster from the modular cult... First off, to all the "play music" and "finish tracks" people, I say, "LAME." If you can't stand the constant G.A.S, find another forum.
I'm thinking I should replace my (sold) Dominion 1 with something compact and versatile. Current thoughts are a Uno Pro X.
Then, I need to think about my Elektron Analog Four and RYTM. I really don't use them much. Part of the issue is the latency when using USB audio, so either it's time to find them a new home, or time to get another ADA8200, which is a bit of a sticky trap, because with more analog inputs comes more desire to fill them.
I'm also still thinking about whether or not I should keep my ASM Hydrasynth Deluxe. It's a nice instrument, but I'm awash in nice instruments, both hardware and software. Might sell it and just get a Kontrol 3 61. I change my mind on that a few times a day. Mostly I don't want to deal with the hassle of selling and shipping it, though I was smart and kept the box.

Speaking only for myself, finishing more projects will in no way interfere with my G.A.S.zerocrossing wrote: Wed Jan 03, 2024 1:01 am First off, to all the "play music" and "finish tracks" people, I say, "LAME." If you can't stand the constant G.A.S, find another forum.
If anything, finishing more projects will actually intensify a desire for more gear. If I finish "X" amount of projects with "X" amount of gear, just think of all the additional projects I could finish with more gear!

I'm starting to think cables should be sold on a low-cost subscription plan. You get new cables delivered to your door every month. You can always call in and say you need some particular cables or connectors, but if the company doesn't hear from you, they send out a default shipment of your most commonly consumed items.vurt wrote: Tue Jan 02, 2024 9:33 pmwell, it depends what is meant by "tidy cables up"cryophonik wrote: Tue Jan 02, 2024 9:31 pmIsn't that considered blasphemous conduct punishable by ouster from the modular cult... If you're finishing tracks then you can pretty much justify any instruments and tools needed to do this.zerocrossing wrote: Wed Jan 03, 2024 1:01 am First off, to all the "play music" and "finish tracks" people, I say, "LAME." If you can't stand the constant G.A.S, find another forum.![]()
Of course if you get new instruments it's better if you use them than not.
