Layers of wav

I just got some nice multi sampled kits and I'd love to use them. I use freeware, but I've found nothing but 3S that can make velocity triggered layers. I know I could just map it out in Paax or CyberFree and play the key that has the level of hit I want, or use multiple instances of 3S, but I'd like the kits to be easier to operate than that. I'd also like them to be in the GM layout to use them in songs I've already composed.
I can't figure out SynthFont, and it keeps crashing (what's wrong with this thing?). I don't want to learn SF2Comp. It gives me a headache ( it's true, the things you do in your youth catch up to you ).
What's the best low cost answer for a sampler or drum sampler? DR-008 is 60 pounds. Can I do better than that? I don't need to tweak the sound. The DR-005 used all my 2.6 CPU.
Thanks

It's easy to roll out multi-sampled kits in sfz format. Just look at pljones' work for examples.
Other multisamples take more work, but drums? No problem at all. I don't know jack about nothing, and I looked at one of Peter's sfz mappings and used it as a template to beat out a few mappings for Wizoo kits that I bought.
Took all of 30 minutes, with no prior experience. Knowledge of "search and replace" function in your word processor is handy.

Thanks Greg.
Dang I let my comp skills fall away so I could spend my time being an irresponsible musician. I wish I could get up to programming speed and make something lazy like a drag n drop editor. I see it so clearly. SE?
Thanks again. I'll get this figured out.

I did alright on making an SFZ. The samples from the FM mag didn't really have enough tweens to be of use. I wound up using them anyway with DK ( free with CM mag ).
Anyone know what happened to A0 Audio?

I don't know if you've check out pljones' site, but you can use his mappings for examples, and he maps every month's CM samples and the occasional FM sample set, too. Might save you some work, though it's fun to roll your own anyhow.
