Wow that jump from 2005 to 2024.
And how little has changed.

I was thinking how weird that poll looks now. But part of it is because it looked a bit weird in 2005 anyway.

Why are VA and FM lumped together, but the relatively rare physical modeling is a separate category, and there are no other synthesis options? Why 3 different categories for sampling (ignoring the duplicate)? Where is the hardware? And where is the fish option (this is a bass thread after all...)

Anyway, to give a 2024 answer: one of the following in descending order of approximate probability

- Modular or semi-modular hardware or software (or a combination).
- Other software plugins, very few of which are likely to be categorized as "VA" or "FM" in the usual way (e.g. Kult, Basimilus Iteritas, Harmonia, etc.)
- Bass guitar (usually heavily processed). Might be recorded live with other parts, might be a loop I recorded myself, or it might be a single note sample that's placed in an editing pass rather than sequenced. Though about 1/3 of the time my bass guitar parts are not a "bass" role but melodic parts or weird noises.
- An actual VA or FM plugin (e.g. LusH-101, BX Oberhausen, OPS-7)
- Using someone else's samples has been generally less likely, though I do have a TE K.O. II now and I've been mostly using the factory samples so far.
- Physical modeling is rare for me unless part of a modular patch. I'm not a big fan of Karplus-Strong as such, but resonators are cool.

I would buy bass from a professional music store/dealer. There you can get some informations and also test and play some basses

I recommend following store

I couldn't decide between Sample playing VSTi (i.e. Trilogy etc.) or Sample playing VSTi (i.e. Trilogy etc.)

19 years before someone does the “bass pro shop” gag. Dear Roy, is this is a record?

I usually pick Moog Model D plugin for classic bass or Prophet V, but if all else fails to sit in the mix, my trusty Rickenbacker 4003 has a go. It often wins.
