MacOS: routing coreaudio output through a DAW?

I have something playing audio directly to coreaudio, let's say a web browser or VLC.
How can I route this through a DAW for live effects such as a mastering plugin?
If you are familiar with Linux: I want the same thing you do trivially with jackd. Jackd was available for macOS, but it seems like a dead project now.

OK, looks like jackd still works in macOS, but routing requires that the client uses the jack API - which of course the web browsers don't do and I would have to recompile VLC and mplayer myself. Unless there is a universal thing that allows me to route coreaudio to jack (similar to running pulseaudio on top of jackd).
