I think I am quite saturated. The Pre Covid years saw some great innovations. Covid and the chip shortage as well as sluggish consumer sentiment have led to less new releases.

There are too many brands out there. And I reckon most of us have a few trusted ones we tend to follow. I’ll just throw in some big and small names here:

For 2023 I was hoping Korg would combine Opsix, Modwave, Wavestate into one Super Device with Poly AT. They could have even merged that with their next Kronos. Instead they released those overpriced SE versions of the individual synths and some lackluster mk2s. I might still be tempted by such a Mega-Korg. And then, what the Korg Berlin team is doing in terms of electro-physical synthesis sounded quite innovative. But so far so quiet.

I would be interested to see what Novation does with the Sequential legacy. Some say the Prophet 12 was Dave Smith’s last visionary synth. Building on that and the Summit, perhaps a premium modern hybrid poly synth would be something to get excited about.

Pittsburgh Modular had a nice run last year. The Taiga is not Lifeforms enough for me though. Also, the menu diving / shift clicking is a bit of a doorstopper for me. The same goes for some of the Dreadbox gear (Nymphes).

Waldorf has delivered with the Iridium and updated Quantum. They could add another or a beefed up synth engine via system update (Arturia is constantly upgrading Pigments).

Roland is a bit stuck in the past, but also good for a surprise. ACB is not dead. A new dual layer synth engine based on ACB with more waveform and modulation options and an even better UI than the System-8 (but without the scene structure of the Jupiter-X) could be an interesting offer. Roland should also seriously upgrade their displays and onboard storage. The patch memory of their flagship models is rather retro.

Moog is undergoing restructuring. Let’s see how this is going to play out. It would be a shame if their production units would be slashed, but in terms of price competitiveness, Moog is far off. This is why Behringer is so successful.

Speaking of which, if Behringer could pool all the knowledge (and building blocks) they have gained replicating synths of yesteryear into an entirely new engine that could turn out quite exciting.

Hmm, I don't wear sweaters or have any succulents. Hopefully a hoodie and a green Koosh ball will be close enough :D

You're late to the party, there's another thread. All the cool kids have already pre-ordered.
