What distortion plugin do you think best replaces Trash 2? I am switching to a Mac and probably will have issues using it going into the future since it has been discontinued.

Post

I have bought Saturn 2 having hope it would replace my trusty trash 2 but I still use Trash 2 more :dog: . I'm glad trash 2 still works on windows 11 . I am very hopeful about that new Roar device coming in Live 12. :D
I make electronic music - DAW of choice : Live 12

Isn't it crazy that in 2024 it's still hard to find a distortion plugin as feature rich as the one Izotope abandoned years ago? Why haven't they updated it?

Kilohearts Multipass comes to mind. You could get the same sort of signal chain of EQ/filter with modulation, multiband distortion, multiband comp, convolution, and delay. Most of those are free too, once you have Multipass. I think the convolver is a paid plugin. Idk, they were basically all paid plugins when I bought in lol.

You could almost replicate that sort of thing, minus the convolution with Minimal Audio's plugins I guess. Morph EQ -> Rift -> Fuse Compressor -> Cluster Delay.

Although none of those give you quite the same control over the waveshaper

It doesn't have the convolution part, but Arturia's COLDFIRE is very much in the same "sound designer's creative distortion" camp - from subtle to over-the-top extreme sound mangling and modulation. It's quite deep actually.

Trash 2 is quite novel in tacking a convolution engine onto a distortion - but you can always chain your own convolution with any other plugin such as Coldfire.

Post

I don't think I have a single plugin that has all that Trash 2 has, especially the convolution, but there are a couple of free/cheap convolution options out there: Melda MConvolution EZ and Kiloheartz Convolver. As for the rest, Output Thermal and Minimal Audio Rift (also consider Fabfilter Saturn--or check out this thread on multi-band saturation/distortion: viewtopic.php?t=577694). For filtering/EQ, I love UVI Shade. Fabfilter Volcano is nice, too. It's pricey to get two of those. There are cheaper options (Melda stuff when it's on sale, maybe; Kombinat Tri).
Doing nothing is only fun when you have something you are supposed to do.

Hmm never heard of the blue cat audio one. It looks pretty interesting. How would you compare it to Trash?

Post

Yeah, Coldfire, Rift, and Thermal all seem like good modern distortion plugins—tough choice.

Trash 2 is such a great plugin....

Izotope have some great DSP...

The one plugin I would take to the desert island is Neutron 3...

So,so good...

And I`m finally getting head around how to use the features in Nectar 3 a little better...

They have made some great audio tools over the years 🌟
No auto tune...

Yes it hurts to have to move on from it for sure

Trash 2 AU still working fine in ableton for me on m1 mac

But yes probably a good idea to have an alternative ready

I know Apple is notorious for breaking old plugins with their OS updates. It sucks. I would keep using it if it didn't have as high of a chance to break.

I know it's different, but have you looked at shaperbox? https://www.cableguys.com/shaperbox

It obviously can do several distortion modes ( and filter, including drive there). But now it can also load impulse responses. The impulse responses from Trash2 are actually just standard .wav files, so you can also load them in Shaperbox.

Some things Shaperbox cannot excactly do like Trash2, but it can do quite a lot of other nice things that Trash cannot do!

My pick would be Arturia Coldfire and Thermal

I am sore about this...but this is not Apple's fault. This is Izotope choosing to discontinue development and support for Trash2. I am going to miss Trash when it stops working. It works now, works good enough, no issues since the jump to M1 but I know its lifespan is limited.

I've posted about this before.
