RAM-related FL problems on a power machine?

I'm posting this in the Northern Sounds forum also. Here's the jist of the problem: when I try to load this particular project file (which has quite a few samples and plugins, but not an absurd amount), FL loads almost all of it, then returns an error like "FL soundfont player caused an error while loading its state", then freezes. I probably have around.. 1.4GB of samples being loaded, most of them from QLSO Gold, which I'm *also* having trouble with, but that's only in the rendering step pretty much. Here's the thing: my computer has 2GB of RAM and a 3.0ghz processor. That project should not be impossible to load. I have tried loading it with a 2-4GB paging file on my system drive, no paging file, as well as a 4GB paging file on all of my 3 drives (audio apps, system apps, samples), with no luck.
Since I've successfully loaded the project, I've tweaked Gold's DFD settings (I've since returned them to what they were before, no luck) and run some tweaks from musicxp.net, but nothing really major. I *can* load certain earlier versions of the projects with a few less soundfonts and samples, but the latest versions I can't seem to. Changing Gold DFD options seems to change the type of errors and freezes I get, but nothing really works. The reason why I changed anything at all is because I was working with *no* DFD and even my 2GB of RAM runs out pretty quick when I work with SoV and Gold, so I wanted to see if I could get DFD working again.
Any advice on the matter would be VERY helpful.

Have you tried using the SFZ soundfont player in place of FL'S native soundfont player? Not sure if it will make any difference but it's worth a try (sfz's free and all the soundfonts I tried in it sound so much better than any other player).

Apparently you have to disable "direct from disk" option and Fl will render fine..
I am waiting for my copy of gold

I hate sfz. It refuses to load samples if it thinks you don't have the memory, which was constantly a problem on my old PC with 384MB of RAM - FL soundfont player didn't do that. The FL soundfont player is more CPU and RAM efficient as well, has an editable envelope, and can do FL pitch bends which are much easier than standard MIDI pitch bends. Not only that, but the FL soundfont player will scan various directories you specify to try to find a soundfont if you load a project and the location of the soundfont has changed - sfz doesn't.
But that point is moot because I can't open the project to change the plugins I'm using.

Right, but at the moment I'm not even concerned with rendering - that's another issue entirely that I'm working with people at Northern Sounds with, because it's apparently not uncommon. I'm simply trying to load the project file. It doesn't want to load regardless of my DFD settings.Apparently you have to disable "direct from disk" option and Fl will render fine..

Ps: Zircon, why not post about your problem in the fl studio tech support forum: http://forum.e-officedirect.com/forum.e ... echsupport

Huh that's odd,I've never had a soundfont that wouldn't load into SFZ and I have far less ram than your current system. I think the sound of SFZ is far superior to that of the FL soundfont player but then to each his own.
You could try moving the Fruity SF player out of your vst directory and then try to load the project. It will complain about the missing .dll but may allow you to load the project to try a fix. Just a thought.

Open fl studio, then go and select some other driver besides ASIO, try and open the project. if it opens, switch BACK to ASIO before you hit play....let us know what happens.

Changing drivers does not do anything. Unfortunately, as I can't seem to load the project no matter what, I'm just going to have to go back to absolutely no DFD. Very depressing. No one here (I've posted before on thi stopic) or on Northern Sounds has been able to figure out what's going on with the rendering errors I'm getting.

Well based on your system specs, you trying all those different page file sizes, and trying another driver on loading, I would say ask it at their forum as well. I am not sure what is causing this problem, sorry.

Having run a LOT of tests with different variables, it doesn't seem to be an FL problem, but rather, a problem with Native Instruments' awful DFD coding. Of course, they've been unresponsive to my calls and emails on the topic.

I found DFD in the Kompakt player with Gold to be unnuseable, though my system isn't as powerful as yours. In the end I upgraded to 3gig RAM, used the XP 3gig switch to enable that extra RAM, and then Julian Storer (author of Tracktion) incorporated the necessary code into Tracktion so that it would run in that mode.
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.
