So... Is ambient the new fashion or,,,

No two of us here on this forum are going to even moderately agree on what ambient is. Some people will say it consists of lush pads, whilst others would consider microphone noise to be an ambient sound.
I recently had an argument on Reasonstation with someone who didn't "get" my music. He was asking for hooks, and I simply said that my hooks aren't like ordainary hooks.
My hooks are the way a pad morphs, the way a hi-hat is suddenly drowned out into a wash of metallic nonsense, the way a vocal echoes... my hooks are of a sonic reference point, not a melodic one.
But he doesn't have the ears to understand this, and I told him so. His ears are trained to listen to those things, his ears are trained to listen to pitches. Which in my opinion doesn't involve a level of detail that listening to sonics does.
This is my suggestion.. maybe ahja listens in this way, hence his comment on the trance producers.
But I've heard their ambient stuff, and to me, its not ambient. Aphex Twin's SAW v2 for me is the epitome of ambient music, not just because the cd case says so, but because the music speaks for itself.
Biosphere's Man With A Movie Camera is in my opinion ambient, as is his substrata cd.
For me the worst ambient is when it starts off with a typical trance lead with the filter cuttoff below 20, and the amp envelope's attack up really high.

Why is that nonsense? Psychedelic ambient music. I doubt you've ever even heard that the tracks I am referring to, and obiously haven't since I didn't name specific songs. I never said this is all I listen to... but, SOME of the best. Just cause they are trance artist automatically means the suck? That's pretty f*cked up, intel. I'm sure many of those artist have more talent then most of could ever dream of. End of story.intel wrote:yes. we're passed that. we need to concentrate more on this nonsense instead:because I know I'm not the only one who laughed out loud, then walked away from the computer shaking my head when I read that heap of silliness.ahja wrote:I, personally think, some of the best ambient tracks are made by trance and techno producers. Here are a few examples... Hallucinogen/Shpongle, Etnica, Pleiadians, Infected Mushroom, Future Sound Of London, Orbital, 12 Moons, Galaxy/Electric Universe, Juno Reactor, Jaia, X-Dream, etc...

You've got a point there, but you can hear quite some mediocre ambient on the net...dburgan wrote:Hmmmm ....
I reject the assertion that there is a disproportionately large number of crummy ambient artists out there. By my reckoning, ambient has a very SMALL number of artists, and the average quality level is far higher than most other forms of electronic music. Someone tell me how many shit dance music or trance artists there are out there in comparison to ambient.

Honestly, not really... I was hoping for a wholesome conversation about recent "ambient" activity, but I suppose I should know better for the future. I only wish that the people who kept PMing me giving me moral support would have spoken up...Sicklecell666 wrote:As planned, I'm sure..ahja wrote:They always do.cloudspine wrote:This thread is becoming ridiculous.

Wasn't meant to be cheap at all. I just found it hypocritical that you'd scold someone else for something you go out of your way to do nearly every day on this forum. Am I wrong?Sicklecell666 wrote:That's a cheap shot, ShaneShane Sanders wrote:This is a bit rich, isn't it?Sicklecell666 wrote:Then maybe you should consider the people that lie dirctly beneath sweeping generalized statements & accusations like the ones you have made in this thread.ahja wrote:Well Sickle.
