Not surprisingly, Steinberg touts Wavelab 12 as the biggest release of the mastering software to date, with nearly 80 new features and improvements. While some of those are of course smaller fixes that you might not even notice, others are big news.

The most significant new feature of Steinberg Wavelab 12 is a new ARA plugin that allows you to run Wavelab’s audio editor as a plugin in ARA-compatible DAWs like Cubase, Nuendo, Reaper, or Studio One. This means that you can now use Wavelab’s advanced editing features to edit audio in your favorite DAW during the production phase. Very nice!

Wavelab 12 also visualizes audio waveforms in multiple colors that correspond to the spectral content. This provides an immediate visual indication of the frequency content of a file, which can be very helpful in pinpointing specific sections or audio content. Furthermore, Wavelab 12 also adds transient markers automatically, thereby letting you snap the selection to transient points for quicker navigation and more efficient editing.

X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

New Ara plugin by itself is worth the asking upgrade price $199
Love it 🥰

Yeah, I read about it yesterday. Cool stuff, although the ARA plug-a-bility is limited to the Pro version of Wavelab 12 (which is kinda understandable, considering that only the Pro version has all features).

I'd guess, this is for an upgrade from a lower level of WL perhaps.? Here in the UK, I'm seeing £85 (inc taxes) for an upgrade from WL Pro 11.2 for example...
System 1 - Win11; i9 13900HK miniPC; 64Gb; Iris XE graphics; Cubase 15.0.30; Studio Pro v8.1;UR44 i/o
System 2 - Win10; i7 4790; 16Gb; GTX750Ti; Cubase v14.0.41; WLab Pro v12.0.51; StudioOne v6.6.4

Steinberg typical, the upgrade prices depend on which former version you own.

All listed on their website, when you click on "Buy Wavelab 12".

I suspect the amount of new Wavelabs 12s sold may be much bigger if Ableton Live adds ARA support!

That's actually a useful update and a very open one. Kudos to Steiny!

Wavelab is one of those products where I'm like, "yeah, I already own that right?" Then I check and I don't. I keep thinking of Spectralayers. ARA does add a bit of gas, but the truth is, I don't really need it. That said, I still appreciate them adding ARA to it.

That's perfectly reasonable. You don't deserve extra savings for waiting. You got your savings when you skipped the prior upgrades.

Someone upgrading from WaveLab 5 does not deserve the same upgrade price as someone upgrading from WaveLab 10.

"Notifications for Nothing" are annoying. Blocking me in return is a good way to avoid this.

I think ARA2 would be more of a killer feature for Sound Forge Pro. WaveLab is already multi-track, so I've never felt the need for it. For Audio Editing projects, I just use WaveLab completely (used to use Samplitude Pro X).

The reason why I got WaveLab is because many DAWs have weaker sample editing, and I needed multi-track, because working in Sound Forge Pro's event mode is just not as efficient as being able to make cuts and then temporarily move sections of audio down to another track until I'm ready to work with them (or easily change the order of different slices of audio).

So, something like Sound Forge would have been awesome as an ARA plug-in, because it's a 1 track (but multi-channel) editor and would slot in nicely in that role.

WaveLab also works well. I just never have a scenario where I'd rather use something like that as an ARA2 Plug-in instead of just using it for everything.

For MUSIC PRODUCTION tasks, and the audio editing that goes on there, the sample editor in Cubase (for example) is more than enough. SpectraLayers makes more sense because it's a restoration tool (WaveLab Pro also has Spectral Editing, so round tripping to SpectraLayers Pro is something I never felt the need to do - though I own both).

For DAWs like SONAR (Cakewalk), though - which lack decent audio editing - this is a REALLY baller feature.

Just not in the DAWs I use, though I'll continue to use it standalone for those same scenarios I mentioned.

I'm holding off on the upgrade, for now. I might wait for a sale. I don't need the ARA2 - especially since it's VST3 only and won't work in Logic Pro - so I don't see a need to rush to upgrade this product... if at all.
