I think some of it's down to the way the tools are evolving. People are becoming more interested in process based music. And I also think that's where the upsurge is, music which is process based (which frequently happens to be ambient), rather than ambient music produced by whatever means.
I make frigging loads of processing contraptions (very few of which make typically ambient sounds), but never mix it down as I think the artwork is in the process and not the result. Becomes a little meaningless to me when you reduce a generative system into a fixed chunk of audio.
I don't claim to be a musician, because I'm doing something entirely different.

I still don't know why people are getting so upset and touchy for a general observation that I noticed. I never singled anyone out and I never passed judgement on anywones work either. (except the album release I noted some ways back which has NOTHING to do with anyone here.
The ways I mentioned in my first post are common pratices, there is no doubt about that. Random generators... Whatta say about something like that? I mean... Random Generators. Frankly, this is something that is quite 'lame', don't you think? Where is the fun/art/musicianship? You guys kept calling me an elitist because I don't feel strongly ammount randomly generated music? C'mon...!
You take this as an insult like I caught you in the act or something, and honestly, I don't care how you do what you do... That part is up to you, not me.
But anyways, this is a bit tiresome now. This wasn't suppose to be a debate, but thoughts and observations on how some ambient peices are created.
Take care everyone, and happy new year.

And yet again, as I said above, I personally think that whatever a random generator (despite there being no such thing) spits out is rendered pointless if you mix it down, stick it on a CD and label it music. A random generator and a concrete composition both make a noise and the similarities end there IMO.

ahja quoth Random generators... Whatta say about something like that? I mean... Random Generators.
I really think you dont actually understand what these things are.

Nope, I dont. Maybe you should read a little more about aleotoric composition. I'd recommend Miranda's book as a reasonable and accessible starting point.
Where is the fun/art/musicianship?
The fun is in creating a device which is capable of producing surprising, non-predictable and interesting sound or music.
The art is in the context of one's decisions during the design process, and the implementation.
Musicianship is not a relevant term. Composition might be, if that informs the process of construction.
You guys kept calling me an elitist because I don't feel strongly ammount randomly generated music? C'mon...!
Incorrect. You were called an elitist because you claimed that the reason there was much more ambient being made was because people were using other peoples 'random generators' to make ambient music because they thought it was 'cool'
Those are two very different things, and no matter how much you wriggle, they are never going to be the same.

An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

ahja, so far you have not deviated a single iota in 17 pages from expressing little but scorn for anything but your own approaches & tastes..
You're really starting to sound like a prejudiced f**king bigot..
And no, I don't think any longer that you're addressing me or the way I do anything, given that you say you've never listened to anything I do, I simply think you're talking out your f**king ass at this point..How you managed to hijack the support of even minded people like opiadream is Hitlerian in scope..
You're talented, I'll give you that..
I wonder what this music of yours must sound like..

And that's cool. I NEVER said there was anything wrong with doing one either way. Did I?cron wrote:What's wrong with taking an alternative angle on creating art/music/whatever you want to call it? I mean, I have a reasonable understanding of musical theory, play various instruments to an (almost) competent standard, but became less and less interested in them as I devoted more and more time to new forms of digital composition, starting with trackers and moving up to modular systems as the years rolled by.

Random Generator = Reaktor Ensemble where you press random and let it do it's thing. So yes, there is such a thing. Of course there are plenty of other Random Generators.. Though Reaktor is most common, I would think.
Whyterabbyt, I know what a Random Generator is, and I seen plenty. I'm actually familiar with the Eduardo Miranda book you have stated. These types of things are not my cup of tea, and perfectly fine if they are yours or anyone elses. Again, I never said there was anything wrong with them, ever.
And, I think that "cool" statement was taken outta context. If you note the original "
If you think I'm an elitist for something as stupid as that, whyterabbyt... Then fine, It's not sweat off my back. I'm not the one huffin and puffin about something that was taken differently than my intentions.
