Check out this portable hard drive:
http://www.firewiredirect.com/firewire/ ... k800.shtml
- Firewire 800 and USB 2.0
- Bus Powered with Firewire (non-4 pin)
- 2.5 inch HD, inlcuding the 60GB 7200RPM 8MB cache HD
- Sustained Read Speed 25MB/s
- Sustained Write Speed 32MB/s
- Backwards compatible with Firewire 400
- Oxford 922 chipset
- 4.9" x 2.9" x 0.5", 0.75 lbs.
(comparison: iPod Photo 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.75 inches)
- Included 110-240V adapter
- Two 9 pin connectors for chaining
- No drivers needed, Windows and Mac
- Hot swappable, or whatever
- Bootable HD for Macs
- $380 configured with the 60GB 7200RPM 8MB HD
They also sell just the enclosure for $120, and you can get the hard drive for about $120 right now. Combined with a Firewire 800 PCMCIA interface for about $80 = total of $320.
I just like to keep track of these things. There are a couple other options for Firewire 400 / USB2.0, such as this one reviewed here:
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/mercury.ars
However, it's twice is thick and probably weighs a little more.
I think I read somewhere that Toshiba developed a 100GB 2.5 inch HD 7200RPM 8MB, which I've not heard about since. When it is released, the prices on the 60GB may drop, I think.
Anyone know anything about Oxford firewire chipsets?
