Opsix is a delight compared. F'em is quite nice to program. In fact any FM synth not like DX is good. It's difficult to put into words how bad an experience programming DX synths is. I'd rather stretch out my haemorrhoids and play jews harp on them than program the fkn things.
Best FM synth of 2022?

For me, pretty well anything that gets away from the old Yamaha DX way of programming FM is an improvement. I still have one, quite like some of the sounds too, but they were and are the worst abominations of excrement flavored excuses for the worst ever experience of programming a synth. I've had 2-button/dial S&S synths from the 90s that were more user friendly. Rack gear with only buttons are easier. They're fkn awful. If you deliberately set out to devise the worst long-winded and unfathomable GUI it's possible to create it would still end up easier than a DX. And those godawful stupid envelopes with 25 parameters that do f**k all to the sound...I really wouldn't piss on my DX if it burst into flames while using it. In fact I'd probably pour some petrol on it and go get some sausages to barbecue on it while enjoying the show.

I still think the original DX7 is a work of genius. Sure impossible to program but must have been a shock in the industry back in 1983 for an instrument that good and modern sounding.

I have F.EM, it is very deep synth that i have no time or desire to dive into, however sometimes i will open it and mess around making weird noises.
Excellent for making complex patches because of the layers and FX chains per layer.
Before i was into very complex synths, programing them and experimenting, but not anymore.

Yep, here are some good examples of it’s sound put through a nice reverb.egbert101 wrote: Thu Feb 01, 2024 10:35 pm I still think the original DX7 is a work of genius. Sure impossible to program but must have been a shock in the industry back in 1983 for an instrument that good and modern sounding.

A little too much reverb and not enough raw instrument, but nice Vangelis reference at 11:11:Examigan wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 12:18 amYep, here are some good examples of it’s sound put through a nice reverb.egbert101 wrote: Thu Feb 01, 2024 10:35 pm I still think the original DX7 is a work of genius. Totally agree, although KORG Modwave is interesting as wellegbert101 wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 12:56 amA little too much reverb and not enough raw instrument, but nice Vangelis reference at 11:11:Examigan wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 12:18 amYep, here are some good examples of it’s sound put through a nice reverb.egbert101 wrote: Thu Feb 01, 2024 10:35 pm I still think the original DX7 is a work of genius. I really like AuroraFM. Think it's really underrated. Here's a bunch of music I made just using it, including drums:

I would be interested to hear music any of you made using mostly one FM synth.

Nice. It's definitely very ... FM. You've certainly captured the FM mood.empphryio wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 3:14 pm I really like AuroraFM. Think it's really underrated. Here's a bunch of music I made just using it, including drums:

I did a whole album using one synth for each track. ...but not one of them was an FM synth.

Well that's neat. I'll have a listen later. Bazille and Zebra can be FM btw.Introspective wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 4:01 pmNice. It's definitely very ... FM. Oh. Oh... It's not a GOOD album. Nono. I wouldn't actually suggest listening. I'm just saying I did it. Heh. It was more an exercise to see what it would be like, and I couldn't help trying it on a bunch of my favorite synths at the time.empphryio wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 4:20 pm Well that's neat. And, yeah, Bazille should probably count. Good point. I tend to think of it as modular, first. (...as I said earlier in this thread.)
I suppose quite a few of those synths CAN be FM, too. ...But I don't really think about it much. I like FM, but usually just the simple stuff ...HARP2 on the DX7, or simple pads ...and drums. FM's great for percussion sounds, of course.

I suppose the process of music production very very simply put goes a bit like this:
50s-70s: Real instruments
70s to 83: Analog Synthesis
83 to 89: FM Synthesis
90 to present day: Sample Synthesis
So of course, it's very easy to miss FM (like I did) not realizing how hugely influential it is to the sound and music production process and on the eighties in general. Oh boy oh boy, I sure did miss out on understanding eighties music because I worshiped the analog gods for so long.
