sort of.. if that's the goal. i know a lot of people engage w/streaming just for fans and don't think of it as part of the income stream. but a lot of people have a different model. play lot's of shows, have dedicated fan group, sell files/merch/vinyl/tapes/cds via places like bandcamp... and actual record stores. it's not gonna work for everyone but it does work for some people who have a certain amount of profile already.Jbravo wrote: Tue Oct 24, 2023 2:01 am i think the streaming vs CDs thing sailed years ago. If you want to get heard and don't use Spotify (or similar) then you are cutting off your nose to spite your face. Do you want to get heard or stick it to the big man because you can't do both. It's not a good way to make a living but it's a step which gets you out there
i think spotify etc would be a more agreeable thing if their rates was more fair and they were just generally less dickish about it all. daniel eck has said some some pretty stupid things.. tone deaf things. investing in military technology was another forehead slapper but whatever... "it's a$$holes all the way down, sir."
i do think there's a problem w/all the passive listening and general devaluing of art.. the commodification/branding of every experience and every thing created.. i think that's another reason some people have a more bespoke kind of approach to what they do w/their music/art whatever.
in the end i'm not gonna complain about what one person chooses to do w/the thing they create and how they distribute it.. but i think it's absolutely fine to shit on those platforms and call them out. their priority is not to the musician or the listener.. it's the shareholder they care about.
