What is the cheapest way to do portable sampling with out resorting to a portable tape recorder?

Is it portable DAT or what? Also suggestions for mics would be appreciated.

Thanks

depends on the quality youre after ...

... a lot of us here get by with field recordings done on minidisc recorders with more or less crappy mics ...

... but if youre talking better quality (and probably slightly less portability) than that then ill have to defer to greater experience ...

I just need moderate quality. Nothing proffesional, I think minidisk might do it for me. Maybe someone could post a sample captured with a mindisk recorder.

Thanks

only (unmangled) thing i have laying around is this ...

... recorded outdoors with an older model of one of these ...

... and one of these ...

... no noise reduction and no enhancement beyond normalising in adobe audition ...

... IMHO the quality of your mic will be more important than the minidisc player you choose (although of course cheap a/d converters will never sound THAT great anyway)

not gonig to dig one out, but use minidisc w/ cheap electret mic (lovely, clear, low noise) used from construction to recording door handles working et c.. found giant metal telephone poles on side of road so rec'd usig them as bells.. sounds lovely w/ all the sand falling off.. very clear. all you need.

I still think a Yamaha SU10 is a good find 2nd hand for $50 or less. Pitifully small storage size (512k) but does allow numerous bit/khz rates, editing, pads and realtime sequencer, ribbon controller, and a surprising amount of MIDI versatility. Also allows for live feeds of audio through it to be effected by LPF, BPF, or HPF filters sweepable via the ribbon. Or live audio that can be 'scratched' via the ribbon in realtime through it as well. About the size of a VHS tape, but built with portability and rugidness in mind.

Depending on what you exactly want to sample, inside or out - it's good for quick snags. ;)

Check out what Plunge (a member here) did with a Sony minidisc recorder and a shure SM58 mic.

Whenever I DJ outside my bedroom, I always bring my MP3 player to record my set. You can buy Hard-driven MP3 players for relatively cheap nowadays. Perhaps there is a way you could hook a HD-MP3 player up to a mic?

EDIT: Also, with a lot of HD-MP3 players, you can set the Bit rate and depth.

I went over to guitar center and they had a portable recorder it was a red tascam unit which had an input for XLR and 1/4 inch and used a compact flash to record. This was going for $299. How much would a minidisk recorder and mic cost me?

Thanks for all your suggestions.
