Softube Model 82

B101, like all of TAL's stuff sort of 'improves' on the original synth. There's a lot more you can do with it, but a lot more to 'go wrong' so to speak. Softube on the other hand, do them exactly by the book. Their Prophet 5, is only 5 voices, has all the features of the original synth and nothing more, same with the Juno, the MiniMoog, and the 101..

The 101 itself, just like the Juno, is one of Roland's good old 'this synth is so basic you CANT make it sound bad' models..

I did a quick demo of both of them. Here's a few thoughts : I find harder to get a bad sound out of M82 than B101. I feel like it's easiser to find sweet spots. They both sound excellent in general. B101 has far better/more presets. The sequencer worflow is better in B101 but I don't think I would ever use the internal sequencer in any of those synth. B101 has a bit more features. If pricing was the same I think I would go for the Tal but rn M82 is 50% cheaper so I think I will go with that.

Model 80 have some extras like vintage knob, detune on the unisson, pan spread, velocity, aftertouch.

I really hope Softube will release a version of the P10.

i don't use the ST version anymore, only the TAL 101.
It sounds so freakin tight to me, just like it rolled down fresh from the factory lines.

Tried both and I preferred model 82. Tal has extra features and I can best describe sounds and feels like a nice vst monosynth based on a SH-101.
Softube sounds and feels like I'm making patches on a SH-101

For the record I've owned and used hardware synths digital and analogue, hardware samplers and various Roland synths over the past 25+ years.
Something with the Softube model 82 and 84 really clicked with me. Could be the filters.
Im a huge fan of Tal sampler so by no means anti Tal. And I wanted to dislike the softube synths.. in fact I didn't even bother demoing them until recently because when I first saw them I thought "not another vst emulation"

TAL 101's envelope behaviour is different to Model 82. When you set a slowish attack on the Model 82 with some VCF ENV applied and play some quick notes the transition is smooth, but the TAL 101 completely retriggers the attack, making it sound a bit stuttered. Can't remember which is the authentic behaviour but in this regard I prefer Model 82.

Isn't that the purpose of the Gate+Trig / Gate / LFO switch? Ie, tal does both, ST doesn't.

Same here. The two Roland synths I've owned besides my XV rack mount were the 106 and the 101. I love the TAL versions (uninstalled my Arturia JP-8 because TAL's gets used instead), but the Softubes feel like 'home' to me. Who knows, everybody's hardware sounded different anyways. If my neighbor owned a 106, his probably sounded like the Roland Cloud or something.

Models 8x sound better. Skeuomorphism plays a big role in that feeling. The scratches on model 84 alone make the sound more authentic.
Just kidding ofc but I wonder how the graphics impact the experience.

Yeah, I passed and I love the Roland filter modeled in this.
