Are there any decent programs for mac that are free? I just got a G4 and until I have the money to get something like Cubase I want to have something to use. Something that can load vsts and let you do some precise loop editing.

try tracktion...
And if you're on mac i'd rather go for logic in fact (but that's just me of course, you should do some research on that)...

Why Logic instead of Cubase? Everyone has recomended Cubase for some reason. I can't figure out why I'd use one over the other. I've been to both the sites but they don't really tell you much. If it depends on the music I'm making, I'm sort fo doing an IDM thing like autechre, aphex twin ish except I want to do vocals and lots of live recordings mixed in as well.

As I said, you'd better inform yourself about this, but i said logic because it's owned by apple and they optimized it for G4 and G5 processors (whatever that means, that should mean more effective processor use). Plus, the plugin package you get when you buy logic pro 7 is just too good to be true: sculpture, ultrabeat, EXS24, Space Designer (a convolution reverb), i believe you get about 70 plugins in total.

Just Float, get the NFR Free Tracktion. I think the deal expires on new years but I'm not sure. Anyways its a really nice simple app and it supports VST's. I dont think logic supports VST's natively anyways (without a wrapper).

yep that's right, logic only supports au (and there's quite a few issues about getting them to work if there not apple's own i heard), forgot that, sorry...
And another thing: tracktion is a much better deal than logic (or, cubase, for that matter) imo...

Nope.
?????????????

Logic is definitely a better deal out of the box. But until Just Float saves $1100+tax (Logic plus wrapper), Tracktion($0.00) is a better deal if he wants to run VST's. Plus I bet you cold buy a few nice plug-ins with 1100 bux. :D

I dunno but... Logic is a good deal if you look at the plugins and all that, but in comparison to tracktion?
I've been looking at the sos forum lately 'cause i'm gonna get logic myself, and there seem to be A LOT of issues... Not that tracktion hasn't got any, but it don't cost 1000$, so...

Cubase has previously had a bad rap on the Mac, but Sx3 is sensational and pretty powerful - 3.01 includes a great new reverb...the warping is incredible and theres bucket loads of freeware and cheap VST X, despite all the hoo ha about audio units..

sx is a delight to use..i've tried Logic, which is pretty nice but im constantly surprised people recommend it l its *not* and never has been intuitive (echoes of its Notator ancestry). I do not like to be immersed in manuals..cubase never asks that of you..ya just dig in and goooooo

a tip : choose your audio interface wisely..

Well he obviously wants something temporary until he can afford Cubase or Logic so I think Tracktion would do the job. 8)
