Cant record knob movements realtime in Sonar 4

Hi!
i got a problem.
I have several software synths, lets say for example that I am using AudioRealism Bassline (from know on called AB).
I cant get Sonar 4 to record the knobmovements that I am doing on the AB.
As I understand I should be able to rightclick on a knob and chose "arm for automation", but there is no such choice, it actually doesnt happen anything when I rightclick the knob.
The Automation button upp next to the record button never seem to come out of it´s "grey" either.
I´ve tried other ways as well, though it would be possible to just arma miditrack for record and then record the knob movements but doesnt work.
Does anyone know what is worng? Are there just maybe a few software synths that support this or what?
Or am I just doing wrong somewhere?
Would really appreciate if someone could help me with this problem, since I have tried all my best so far without success.
Best regards, and merry Xmas!

I'm at work right now and kind of hazy on the process but what you have to do is hit "arm for automation" by right clicking the effect (I may be mistaken on this part so consult your manual or the help file), then a box will appear listing all of the effects parameters at which point you select all of the parameters you intend on automating. Once you select these the "Record Automation" button will be un-greyed and you can whack away at the automation however you please.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

Okay. But a Dxi or Vst software synth is not treated as an effect,..or I have never done that anyway. I have always "insert" , "dxi synth". Then I get one midi track and one audio track. midi track "plays" the synth while it sends the audio to the audiotrack.
I cant e wrong on that?
It is possible though to insert a dxi synth inte the "effects" column in an audiotrack but have no idea how to control and play that synth then.
I would be so happy if I could get this to work.
I´ve read all I can, but as I understand you should rightclick the software synth knob it self and then be able to chose.
This might be a hard nut to crack...Im afraid.

Instead of using the Insert => DXi Synth menu or the Synth Rack, do this:
o create an audio track (from the right-click menu or the Insert menu)
o add the synth to the FX bin of the audio track (right-click in the FX bin and chose DXi Synth)
o create a midi track (from the right-click menu or the Insert menu)
o expand the midi track and click on its Output dropdown menu
o select your synth (the one you just added, above) as the output of the newly created midi track
The midi track will feed its data to the synth in the audio track and the synth will feed its audio to the audio track. This is the way midi/soft-synth/audio was linked in Sonar prior to the Synth Rack. And it still works.
Now you can do automation for the synth the same as you would an effect (right-click on the synth in the FX bin in the audio track and select Arm Parameter).

haha. Now I see. I looked into it,..hmm.. You were right IF you actually inserted the software synth into the Fx bar in the Audio track. and then made a midi file that has all the midi events. then in the midi tracks output field you picked the name of the synth that you inserted into the Fx bar. Then I could rightclick it in Fx bar and chose Arm automation. Tryied it and it worked.
Im a bit supprised though that it doesnt seem to work when you insert an dxi synth from the "insert", "insert dxi". Well,..from now on Im gonna use the software synths in the new way. Seems to be better.
Thanks for the help!

I agree. I think that is a shortcoming in Sonar. I wish they would change it.Im a bit supprised though that it doesnt seem to work when you insert an dxi synth from the "insert", "insert dxi".
Glad to hear things are working for you, now!

The problem is that the synth in question is not a true DXi;it's a wrapped DXi.DXi2 synths are the only ones where you can record the knob movements in Sonar. If the synth in question SENDS cc info when you turn a knob as well as receive cc info for automation, then the echo DXi to armed MIDI tracks option will work.

Dreamstation DXI2. Not sure if LiveSynth Pro was DXI2 or just DXI.cabante wrote:dont think I ever encountered a Dxi2 software synth. Mention one please.
Most DXI synth I have are VSTI synths with a wrapper of some sort. This is true of RGC and the NI products I have, for starters.

Don't know what NI stuff you own,Doug-Kontakt,Reaktor starting with V4 and Absynth starting with V2 are true DXis and not wrapped.dougsyo wrote:Dreamstation DXI2. Not sure if LiveSynth Pro was DXI2 or just DXI.cabante wrote:dont think I ever encountered a Dxi2 software synth. Mention one please.

DR-008 is a DXi2 as well(starting with 1.18 or 1.19 if I remember).

I am using the wrapped VST of Bassline in Sonar 2.2 and have no problems using AB's built-in knob automation. Insert it in the synth rack as usual, then click on the "Options" button in AB and "Activate MIDI learn". From there, twist a knob on your controller, click a synth control to associate it with, repeat as desired and "Deactivate MIDI learn" when you're done.
I still have a couple of DXi synths in my collection (Junglist) but overall I've been a lot happier since I started sticking to the VST versions -- even wrapped, they tend to automate better than DXi ever did, and they work in any host (unlike DXi, which I've only seen supported by Sonar and Fruity).
