Tone2 Synthesizers wrote: Thu Mar 07, 2024 5:06 pm I investigated this and I can only get this look on my very old Mac mini with MacOS 10.12 when you use a scaling smaller than 100%. It doesn't look like this on BigSur or 10.14. On MacOS 10.12 Apple still used nearest neighbour resampling instead of linear interpolation for scaling images. This results in aliasing.
If you are still on such an old MacOS version I recommend to upgrade it. Especially since it didn't get security upgrades since years.

Further notes: The Elegant skin doesn't work well for GUI sizes other than 100% as the text labels are pre-rendered to the background of the skin. I recommend using a different skin for the other sizes. 'Dark Aqua' has a similar look and here the labels are realtime-drawn and crisp.

Furthermore you can enhance the visual quality and performance by changing your display scaling to exactly 100% or 200% in the system preferences of your Mac.
Thanks for looking into it. Yes, I am on macOS 10.13 High Sierra
I will upgrade some day, but it requires new hardware for my 5,1 Mac Pro. Anyhow, for me, the aliasing is not really a problem either way - I just wanted to mention it for the sake of helping beta test :borg:

Loving the new features!

IT would be cool if there was a version of the elegant skin but without the dots around it and that used the text from other skins. You could add some way of seeing bipolar controls as well like the old skin?

A very simlar skin like this is already included. It is called 'Dark Aqua'.

As passionate filter lover ,considering what kind of madness I2 filters generate, the new moog 24db is ''must have'' to me,mostly because it will complete already amazing filter section.
Can't wait to try combinations with other filters, like how would Curtis, which is, if i'm not mistaken Dave Smith type of filter, combine with moog 24db in serial mode - the one is with tense character, other is so smooth.
Last few years i shrink my list to few work horses, the ones you can rely on ,when time is limited and man need fast results...other 50+ i forget i have them sometimes, cause after an hour, the result is mostly headache, but nothing serious as sound and entire inspiration is gone :)
Icarus stand out as modern heavyweight synth imho.
There is no perfect synth, but this one is close as sound :)
Too tired now to upload and share a demo ,but tomorrow will show some modern techno, ambient, cyberpunk and analog-ish stuff from beta Dreams set :)
Cheers :)

Hey Tone2, for the skin with the rings around it, it's fairly obvious if the control is bipolar or uni-polar, but how do you tell if the modulation is bidirectional or uni-directional? The other skins where the mod amounts are shown within the dial show that, but this one has a change in color after the current value, so how is it shown if it modulates both ways?

playing around with the beta today, it's pretty great. and it runs beautifully here (logic, sonoma). easy to adapt to (from icarus 2.5).

if i never see the word 'wobble' again, tho... that would be great. but really, this is a move forward, and good to see it

The oscillator parameter text, notably in the Granular modes where the waveform is big, is very difficult to read over top the waveform like that.

I only had 2.5 for a short while before 3 but I am sure I could draw in shapes on the step lfo using my Macbook trackpad - can't seem to do it now.
Also I really like metal aqua skin but I just wish there was a way to dim the colour around the knobs, they seem a bit too bright for me on every skin.

It is incredibly cliche and lazy to invoke it as means of dismissal. Why don't you explain what you mean by 'analog' or "too digital" for that matter?

If by analog you mean a sense of weight, thickness, and non-linearity - Icarus can definitely pull that off. I'm not even being a fan-boy here, you're just beating that same old dead ass horse that is virtually a non-issue at this point.
By default, Icarus 3 has a bright sound, which may make it sound "digital" to some (though of course this can be turned off/changed). But I totally agree - I've found some of the filter modes like the Curtis one to sound very weighty, and the unison plus the distortion make it very easy to get "warm" sounds that are nonlinear. One thing that I've noticed about Tone 2's "analog" style filters is the resonance curve changes as the cutoff does. As a result, subtle LFO modulation to the cutoff itself results in nonlinear changes across the whole frequency spectrum (and this is before any distortion is added). Furthermore, such modulation is super easy to achieve because LFO 3 is already pre-mapped to the filter cutoff anyways.
I've gotten some of my favorite "analog style" sounds in Icarus for this reason.

It sounds great overall but I have to be honest the granular is poor - its not even proper granular synthesis to me as you can't lengthen and overlap the grains and you can't change the grain shape - its a shame as it sounds so good with the fx and filters.

So more of a sample stretch mode then? Still useful if you can scrub through a sample.

More like that i would say yes. It is quite like Bitwig Sampler granular mode.

One feature I would love to see is a way to switch the order of filter settings.

Lets say I have a carefully tuned, key-followed setting on Filter 1 and a key-followed bandpass on Filter 2. But I decide they would sound better in the opposite order; the only option I have is to copy one filter over to the other, thereby completely losing the previous setting. If there was a way to simply switch their order, I think it could open up a lot options.
