What are the most promising open source DAW source codebases (2024)?
I mean, ones that show most promise to be completed or to be useful.
I think zrythm, but when I last looked at it it misses features to be production-ready (I mean at Bitwig-level). It also felt quite unstable, so I am not infact sure how well it has been coded.

The Traktion engine might be worth to check.

Actually, I never realized it had the proper GPL v3. I always thought it was meant to be sold eventually and the community edition was some sort of demo.
Yes, could make a good Linux of DAWs.

It's very geared towards the Pro Tools -style workflow. Also, my experience from a few years back was that the code is badly organized (it looked like a typical result of democratic development).
Yes, looking at the GitHub again, this folder is huge:

I wonder if there's any open source DAW out there that uses the Tracktion engine. I'm not aware of any.
I wouldn't be surprised if at some point they move to some dual licensing scheme similar to JUCE. ...Oh - I just checked - they already do. Yeah - makes sense to me.soundmodel wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 9:45 am I never realized it had the proper GPL v3. Thanks for the Ardour recommendation, capitalist swine! I haven't installed it yet but I did find a 32 bit build which I preferred.
