Basslines - Opening Filter Raises Volume

Hello,

Kinda self explanatory really. A lot of my tracks involve a bassline growing by opening the filter. The problem I have is that opening the filter raises the volume (as the high frequencies are let thru the filter I guess).

I usually overcome this by fading the wave file slightly. Is there a better solution, would compression make any difference?

I would try this myself but I'm at work.

Indeed. A compressor or limiter... Basically these are smart-assed automated faders :P

cheers guys. I'll get the hang of this one day.

my filters have a seperate boost/cut

you could automate the volume down as the filter
opens (hover mouse over dials for cc #s)

:)

Cheers Matt. I had thought of doing that, but I wasn't sure I'd be able to match up the drop in volume with the filter opening if that makes sense. Of course if I could draw the automation then it would be easy. That's kind of why I was looking for an easier solution.

I think that its to do with the fact that lower frequencies are less audible on the average monitoring equipment.

The lower the frequency, the harder it is to hear it. So, if using a low-pass filter to achieve the bass, opening it, as you said brings in higher frequencies which are easier to hear, and the range of sounds that can be heard shoots up!!

A Kriminal sez, a limiter will stop unwanted volume spikes happening (the same way that a club does so that a DJ cant blow the PA) :)

I know what you mean, however I'm using very good monitors

Nothing, i dont use any compression in the mixing stage on any sounds, only when i master. I cant be arsed to set it all up, and it sounds ok to me so i just..erm...do that

well me neither, until now at least. I shall give this a go later and report back (assuming it as least of some interest to somebody  )
