clean up the room and light some candles - cleaning my work space seems to clean out my head. as for the candles, theres a specific one from Yankee that I like alot called Sage and Citrus - my girlfriend bought me a bunch of them for christmas. So I'm stocked up for a while.
I even named a tune after it:

High grade hit of acid and a bag of potato chips . . . no, wait, that's what I plan on taking when I go into space. How 'bout a shower and a shoe shine?

i've found that it's really essential to sit down in front of the keyboards
and putting the headphones on seems to help a lot, too

Pre-music?

The whole idea of a pre-music 'ritual' makes me really nervous. If I ever sit down and say 'I, the great maestro, will now be creative', I can pretty much guarantee that nothing very creative is going to come out. A self-fulfilling prophecy, maybe... but anyway, I'd rather not think so much about what I'm trying to do.
Mixing and other more technical stuff is different, then, of course, I'll make sure I'm comfortable and not likely to be disturbed by noise or whatever.

Put a couple of lamps on, and the lava lamp, have a coffee or maybe beer or wine if its the evening, in which case maybe a wee spliff too. Then just noodle away

usually involves pulling up cubase and grabbing my beloved taylor acoustic and turning the mic on..receiving huge howls of feedback from my monitors because I've forgotten to turn them off..this in turn causes the dogs to race about barking and I've got to turn the monitors off, put the guitar down, go calm the dogs..then come back in sit down and pull up kvr.
