First off....thanx for all the comments...they are all very much appreciated. Only problem with donating audio, though it's a fantastic idea, is that we'd have to make CD's or something to distribute to those that donate money....this brings in shipping costs as well as manufacturing costs....patches are easier to transfer online than an album download. Still a great idea though, maybe someone will fly with it.mn wrote:Thanks to Dangerous Bear, Lionsdream, ToTC, and zvon and everyone else for taking up the cause.
In lieu of having any patches, a few observations and random thoughts. You may consider or ignore them at your discretion.
First, I realize ideas are flying and we all are searching for a way to be anything other than useless in the face of such an event. I would hope we can come up with a cohesive KVR-wide approach that is both as effective as we can be in the present cirumstances, but also sustainable and ongoing. Let's make it a legacy for KVR in the future that we made giving a part of who we are on an ongoing basis as a group, not just as individuals. We all already share with each other (well, you share with me) that's what makes this place so special. Let's now make looking outward part of our focus.
Why limit the scope to synth patches? Clearly there is a large focus here at KVR on synth developers and sound designers, and on users heading in that direction. But there is also a very large community of folks here who are just musicians. Many may have audio to donate, as Shane Sanders kindly did here. Conceivably folks could offer services mixing or mastering a song for someone. There are also developers who could possibly develop a unique effect or synth that is only available in the donation bundle. In fact, why not a KVR bundle of plugs as a product? People could include other transferrable goods like some sort of gift certificate. Point being, let's be more inclusive and innovative in what we offer, limited only by our imaginations. Obviously some of the early adopters here are sound and preset designers so it's natural that is the early focus but let's not constrain ourselves to that. I realize many developers, sound designers, and patch designers already graciously shower freebies on KVR and the community, and I suspect that (licenses permitting) having one place to get those would be worth a few dollar donation. But I suspect having some unique content would be better.
I'd like to see some fundamental additions to KVR. I mean, sure, it's easy to suggest change to something I have no control over right? And it will sound like discontent with the status quo, but it's not. I'm thinking of maybe a dedicated forum for charity and for working on these sorts of things. I'm thinking of prominently accessible areas of the website where the things folks are coming up with are easily findable, easily orderable, not just a flag in the database "charitable" - let's face it, I love KVR and Ben does a great job, but it is a little dense even for regulars. There's a lot of information to wade through and getting to any patches is a several layer process. The idea is not to draw users in, the idea is to disburse help out. The idea is to make it visible and ongoing at KVR, not buried in text in a mountain of text in a mountain of forums. I'm thinking about making an express lane for people wanting to contribute by donating during a crisis can get in and out without having to listen to me tell someone what I think the best way to use BFD is.
I'm thinking about a KVR where the top area not only has the banner ad du jour, but some mention of what we're doing for others, wether that be quick links to these patches and things, or totals disbursed, or just free ads for charitable causes. I'm thinkng of a KVR where some companies and developers voluntarily say "I'll buy a banner ad at KVR but a small percentage of the revenue you get must go into your charitable fund". Or a KVR where that is part of the contract for the ad in the first place.
We are all extraordinarily fortunate to be able to have the luxury of talking to our favorite developers, making bug reports and suggestions, helping each other with obscure features, complaining that something is utter crap because it doesn't sound "real" enough. Hey, it's fun right? And sometimes it seems infuriating and we want to lash out at each other. Well, it's just bits, folks. And it's just us noodling around making software and tunes and enjoying ourselves. And I consider myself lucky if the worst thing that happens to me today is some plug crashed my host.
So in short, I'd really like to help but I am by no means a preset or sound designer. I can go hit random in eXT or Fruity, but that's not really the point right? If some concerted audio front happens I can see maybe donating some tunes. Or I will be happy to help with grunt work of recordkeeping or web site maintenence or what have you.
Op, if you do a banner, that too will be a great contribution to the cause. I was planning on doing one too but if you have some ideas... go for it!!!op519 wrote:I will try to do a reaktor ensemble and perhaps some presets for synths and also try my hand at doing a banner.
No reason for me to say that here except to BUMP this incredibly important efforts thread to the top.
Cheers

We are already in the process of contacting some people, and any contribution is welcomed.op519 wrote:I should One thing we/or at least the people who are putting this together should do is send emails/pm (if possible) to people like Rob Papen, Manuel Schleis (vengeance-sound.de) Tim Conrardy (perhaps he didn't see this), Biomechanoid, Brok Landers, Chris List (reaktor), rachMiel (reaktor) etc. People who are well regarded in the area of sound design. Although it shouldn't be necessary to have name recognition in something like this, it definately wouldn't hurt
Also ask all dev's here if they have patches which they were holding onto and ask if they can contribute them to our effort.
That's great smart! Thank you so much! I'll send you the banner soon as we have it reaady.smart wrote:totc,
