Why the lack of Mac OSX VST support?

I understand, to a certain extent, that's just the nature of the beast. There's just a far greater number of PC VST users out there and Apple's pushing AU. So VST developers want to get to the biggest number of people and for those who use the development environments out there (like synthedit), PC is the path of least resistance.

I love the SMEX ports for mac osx. I just wish there were more. I think the majority of power-users are on macs (no, I'm not claiming to be a power-user, but you can't deny that, warranted or not, macs are the preferred tools of professionals in production). These people would probably be more willing to donate, since they make a living off music already.

So I guess what I'm requesting is that you developers don't forget about osX. Your plugs are some of the best I've used.

Well ... there's quite a bit of smartelektronix stuff that HAS been ported to OSX VST, such as :

ambience reverb - http://www.smartelectronix.com/~magnus/

analogue delay - http://www.smartelectronix.com/~mdsp/

Bouncy - http://www.smartelectronix.com/~bram/

Compressor - http://mdsp.smartelectronix.com/

Crazy Ivan - http://www.smartelectronix.com/~bram/

Cyanide - http://www.smartelectronix.com/~bram/

Dfx buffer ovverride - http://destroyfx.smartelectronix.com/
Dfx EQ Sync
Dfx geometer
Dfx monomaker
Dfx polarizer
Dfx rezsynth
Dfx scrubby
Dfx skidder
Dfx transverb

Dmi hammer - http://www.smartelectronix.com/%7Edmi/index.html

Dmi flute - http://www.smartelectronix.com/%7Edmi/index.html

H20 - http://www.smartelectronix.com/~bram/

KT Drumtrigger - http://koen.smartelectronix.com/

KT granulator 1.2 - http://koen.smartelectronix.com/

Madshifta – http://www.smartelectronix.com/~bram/

S(m)exoscope - http://www.smartelectronix.com/~bram/

Supaphaser - http://www.smartelectronix.com/~bram/

Supatrigga - http://www.smartelectronix.com/~bram/

.... which is pretty good for a list of mac freeware coming from guys who predominantly work on PCs.
My advice would be to make donations for the above plugs to encourage them to do more OSX ports .... oh, and not to bring up the mac-used-by-professionals "poweruser" thing, because .. well, it starts flame wars, it's highly debatable depending on what aspect of audio production you're talking about, and may annoy the people you're trying tp encourage ! :D
Best,

I'm not trying to start a flame war. Computers are just tools and you can do anything you want with either. Maybe its ergonomics or market share or even a little bit of snobbery (macs are generally more expensive), but macs are used in a a lot of studios along with pcs.

I may just build a PC for music so I can take advantage of all the good pc vsts, but in the meantime, these plugins are more than great.

SMEX rocks.

well i think the reason may be that a coder generally needs the
target platform to compile for the target platform, right?

i mean, there would be a xhip for mac if i had any clue how mac
worked, knew asm for mac cpus, mac cpus had a macs() function
(or atleast 32x32 -> h32 discard l32 or 32x32->64 multiply)
and had any idea how to recode and compile on one. the problem is
much more complex than simply having the desire to do so, because
honestly, i wish xhip ran on every platform out there.

(no, i wont give out code, you can tell me how though)

the problem for me is i dont own a mac, i dont want to try running
alot of problematic software, and i dont know enough about cross
compiling using g++ and not to mention exactly how to compile
into a usable form. (dll for windows...uh, exactly what for mac?)
.so for linux i guess, last time i checked, thats a pretty basic
format, single exception to the problem though.

i'd suggest you put togeather a walkthrough of setting up compilers
and compiling on the platforms you'd want, and provide the software,
and the hardware, and the time, and you'd probably get alot of devs
wanting the help with it.

Well it's really because all of us but marc work on PC.I had a mac at work some time ago, and I've used it to port almost all my plugins to vstosx and/or AU.
look.
However all the one I've worked on since (not public yet) are PC only for now. And I'm working on PC at work too.

But I can tell you that once I'll release something new I'll manage to borrow a mac and release it for both plateforms.

happy new year guys.

cheers

And don't forget apulSoft has started to port many of the freeware plugins to OSX:

i suppose i sort of fit in on both sides of this (though i lean heavily toward preferring PC) because i teach people how to use cubase/pro tools/logic/live,etc for a living, so i encounter plenty of people every week who use macs (who dont have any power in their music skills at all ) and pcs (who often are making a living off of music, like myself)...i do have a guy who i work on remixes and tracks with who has a g5, and honestly the g5 is the first mac i would consider owning. but i genreally prefer pc anyday-it makes more sense to me and i prefer all the synth edit stuff available, as well as more donationware stuff. (there are so many for vst)...just last night i was trying in vain to find a step sequencer plugin or appregitator plug for my friends mac version of tracktion. i never found one....threre are tons (including a good smex bundle) of midi fx plugins available for vst....
i'm not trying to knock mac or boost pc but of course we all have our preferences.i suppose for me the question since i dont know at all how to code is why someone couldnt design something like synth edit for mac that could make au files. but i agree, there are a good amount of smex fx for osx and considering how new au is as a standard i think its a promising future. but i am still amazed at how many people still see MACS as the only REAL computers for music and PCS as something for amateurs. i prefer pc. and i have records out done on pc. many producers look at me in shock when i say i use pc. i dont know why? i dont use pc for music because i cant afford mac. anyway, thanks for all the great smex plugins for both platforms. i guess i feel for my mac friends because there arent nearly as many shareware/freeware plugs.
