let's say ever since the Rea plugins became embeddable in the mixer, the absence of external plugins doesn't feel as lacking

In most cases, it's still easier to work with an effect sequencer than playing with automations, although it's situational.

Sadly yes, I downloaded and opened it, and then I could not untaste it

Is REAPER the current best long term choice?
